Qunci Villas, hailed as one of Indonesia’s “hippest hotels” by the New York Times several years ago, has now been named “Indonesia’s Leading Resort” by the World Travel Awards (WTA), the Lombok accommodation beating the best of Bali resorts and 13 other nominees, most international hospitality brands.

Qunci 1WTA, recognized as “the Oscars of travel and tourism,” announced this year’s winners at its annual gala, held this week in Dubai. “In this, our 20th year, we are pleased to say that Qunci Villas epitomizes our organization’s mission and that is to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the travel industry,” said Graham E. Cooke, WTA’s founder and president.

Accepting the award, Qunci’s General Manager Ms. Wiwit said, “We are elated of course, but I have to share this acceptance with the island of Lombok for giving us its unspoiled, uncrowded beaches and culture and while we are indeed located next to Bali, Lombok offers travelers completely different experiences.”

American entrepreneur Scott Coffey purchased the land on Mangsit Beach in 2002, building the property’s first 20 rooms at a time when the region had its share of concerns. “Hotel occupancy across Indonesia had fallen like a rock. Hoteliers thought I was nuts,” said Coffey, “but we prevailed with a significant portion of our bookings from Europe, many repeat, along with what is today numerous regional guests from Perth, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore arriving on direct flights.”

Qunci Villas, celebrating its own 10th anniversary in July, is a privately owned and operated boutique hotel with 78 rooms and luxury villas situated on Lombok’s western shore and nearby hillside, most all accommodation facing the Bali straits and Bali’s revered Mt Agung.

All rooms offer at least 55-sqm of living space with a private balcony and all one- and two-bedroom villas include a private pool. The hotel features three infinity-edge pools, two measuring 30 meters, the other 15, and each of its spa treatment rooms opens onto a private courtyard with a large soaking tub carved from a single Javanese stone. The hotel is also renowned for its minimalist design using Indonesian materials and its collection of local and international art.

Qunci—pronounced koon-CHEE and derived from “kunci,” the Indonesian word for “key” —- was selected as the hotel’s name to fit it’s motto, “Qunci Villas is your key to an idyllic Lombok.”

The World Travel Awards are decided in a popular vote by both travel professionals and travelers numbering in the hundreds ofthousands annually. This year, over 1,300 travel, tourism and hospitality companies competed for the prestigious awards honoring a wide range of destinations, facilities and services, from airlines and airports to specialized resorts (family, casino, golf, spa) to cruiselines and luxury trains.
