The Cambodian Daily reports that the pair, both waiters, allegedly took the 22-year-old woman back to their room at the Waikiki Beach Club in Sihanoukville last week.
According to SBS broadcasting, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) knows of the reports but has declined, for privacy reasons, to comment further.
The paper reported earlier that the alleged rapists, aged 22 and 17, lived and worked as waiters at the Waikiki Beach Club. They allegedly found the victim asleep on O’Chheuteal Beach, also known as Serendipity Beach, in front of the club and took her back to their room, it said. Once there, each raped her.
The pair confessed after their arrest on Wednesday, the paper said.
“They raped her because they couldn’t control their feelings when they saw her sleeping alone on the beach,” provincial serious crimes bureau chief Nhet Phoan told the paper.
DFAT warns in the Cambodia section of its Smarttraveller.com.au website: “Foreigners have been the target of sexual assault in Cambodia. Due to the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, victims of violent crime, especially rape, are strongly encouraged to seek immediate medical assistance.”
