Record breaking IT&CM China 2017

Records tumbled at the IT&CM China 2017 exhibition, co-hosted by CTW China, held in Shanghai 21 – 23 March.  Now in its 11 year, China’s leading international meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) event attracts international and China buyers and sellers in the inbound, outbound and domestic MICE business.  It attracted 720 exhibitors from 288 organisations with 540 buyers – up from 506 last year.

Shanghai was selected as the destination for IT&CM China due its resources, which have placed it in the top five MICE destinations globally.  Shanghai offers a 144-hour (6 day) free-visa system for 51 countries.  It also features large scale convention centers including Shanghai International Convention Center, Intex Shanghai and the Shanghai New International Expo.  It also boasts the longest metro system in the world with 364 stations and the world’s fastest train. Its two international airports serve 70 million passengers annually.

CTW China assists Chinese corporate travel professionals with stronger decision-making through the sharing of global practices and knowledge.  A key feature of this year’s conference was the introduction of a mentorship program.  Mentors included Adidas, Apple, Lenovo and Siemens.  Conference speakers included representatives from AB Inbev, Air China, AirPlus International, BP, Bravolinks, Carlson Wagonit Travel, Delta Air Lines, DIDI, Ford Motor, GE, National Oilwell Varco, Qatar Airways, Travelport, Unilever, Wyndham Hotel Group, and Youli Consulting.

New bureau and corporates at the IT&CM China 2017 event included Air China, Arctic Outback Adventures, Ministry of Tourism Argentina, Barcelona Convention Bureau, Dusit International, Tourism Fiji, Hard Rock Hotels International, Millennium Group, Monaco Government Tourist Bureau Asia, VisitScotland, Shenzhen Airlines, South Africa National Convention Bureau, and the Vienna Convention Bureau.

By co-hosting with CTW China, IT&CM China 2017 created a 6,000 sqm event that featured a shared business environment and was more inclusive.  The largest exhibiting pavilions by size were the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute, Meetings & Exhibitions Hong Kong and Korea Tourism Organization.  The buyer profile was 600 attending Chinese and international MICE, association and corporate buyers, a 20% increase over 2016 from 38 geographic markets.

Networking was a key focus.  Highlights included four luncheons sponsored by the National Institute of Tourism Promotion Argentina, Tourism Fiji, Fukuoka Convention & Visitors Bureau, and South Africa National Convention Bureau.  A MICE promotion session was presented by Hainan Tourism Development Commission; a dinner by Macao Trade and Promotion Investment Institute (IPIM.  The official opening ceremony and welcome dinner was hosted by the Shanghai Marriott Parkview.  Cocktails were sponsored by Accor Hotels and JW Marriott Shanghai Changfeng Park.  The first-ever pre-show city tour to Istanbul for international buyers was hosted by Turkish Airlines.  Pre-show trips by Pacific World around Shanghai were popular as were post-show familiarisation trips to Hangzhou with Hangzhou Tourism Commission.

Knowledge-building and thought-leadership were a key focus:  the future of MICE in China and the impact on Associations in China from self-autonomy were featured topics.  GainingEdge, the global leader in conventions and meetings consulting, introduced a MICE Clinic series of campfire sessions to assist delegates deal with industry challenges and trade show opportunities.  Some 18 speakers from major corporates and organisations provided 11 educational presentations, Association Day Forums, and Campfire Knowledge Sessions.

Hosted in English and Chinese, 13 briefings were provided to international and local media from the National Institute of Tourism Promotion Argentina, Delta Air Lines, Gloria Hotels & Resorts, HNA Hospitality, Huangshan Tourism Committee, MEET TAIWAN, Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia, Monaco Government Tourist Bureau, Ningbo Tourism Administration, Shouqi Limousine and Chauffeur, Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), United Airlines and Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Convention & Exhibition Affairs.

The IT&CM China 2017 exhibition, co-hosted by CTW China, was organised by TTG Events, a business group of TTG AsiaMedia.  And co-organised by Carlson Wagonlit Travel, China.
