Regarding Molasses Spill in Honolulu Harbor

September 16, 2013 Destination Hawaii No Comments Email Email

The HTA is monitoring the molasses spill that is currently contained to Honolulu Harbor, the primary seaport for the state of Hawaii, and the adjacent Keehi Lagoon.

Currently, it is business as usually for ocean activity operators in Waikiki and Kewalo Basin, and we are not aware of any reported vacation cancellations to the Hawaiian Islands directly attributed to this incident. We encourage our industry partners to help educate our visitors on the limited areas affected by the spill.

We continue to advise our visitors and industry partners to familiarize themselves with information on visitor safety available on http://www.travelsmarthawaii.com/en/, and Hawaii state and county civil defense websites.

As an important reminder, we all need to be mindful of warning signs posted in the areas we visit and suggest that visitors consult lifeguards about water conditions when visiting the beach. It is also important that everyone take precautions when going into the ocean.
