Region’s Young Racing Drivers Urged To Learn From The Best In The Business When The F1® Machine Comes To Yas Marina Circuit
Don’t miss a second of the action – absorb everything. That is the simple message from a motoring expert to the UAE’s wealth of young motorsport talent set to attend this weekend’s title-deciding 2016 FORMULA 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX.
He urges everyone from children getting behind the wheel at Yas Kartzone to young adults competing in Yas Marina Circuit’s host of grassroots championships to learn as much as possible from Abu Dhabi’s annual window into the F1® spectacle.
“Learn, learn, learn. Be a sponge – absorb everything,” urges Phil Ellis, Yas Marina Circuit’s Driving Experiences Manager.
“Go to the autograph sessions, analyse how the drivers start, get different viewpoints from every Grandstand of how they take corners, study how the drivers react during pit stops. Don’t just watch the F1® drivers – go to the GP2 and GP3 Series races and learn as much as possible about the level of competition in championships that feed drivers directly into Formula 1®. This is especially important as we see these two titles also being decided at Yas Marina Circuit
“We are seeing the emergence of talented young drivers competing here, especially since the launch of F4 UAE at its Yas Marina Circuit home. It’s vital that they make every use of this incredible insight into what it takes to compete and how to handle the pressure at the pinnacle of the sport.”
Phil urged youngsters to keep close eye on the driving style and pit lane manner of Max Verstappen, the 19-year-old Red Bull Racing driver who has had a remarkable breakthrough year in F1®.
“Max is an unbelievable talent and it’s incredibly rare for someone to progress so rapidly from karting into F1®,” said Phil. “But he has done it and is more than matching well-established drivers. He’s an inspiration to young F1® hopefuls.”
Yas Marina Circuit has fast become a hub of grassroots motorsport action.
The path for young drivers into Formula 1® is spearheaded by the recent arrival of the Formula 4 UAE Championship, which made its debut at the iconic F1® Circuit on 28th October. Open to drivers aged 15 years and above, the new championship was created by motorsport world governing body FIA to help local drivers in the UAE bridge the gap between existing regional racing series and European competition.
Formula 4 UAE sits alongside perennial favourite the TRD 86 Cup. Supported by Toyota Racing Development (TRD), the TRD 86 Cup is a single-make, sustainable local motor sport initiative introduced by Yas Marina Circuit to enable amateur racers to drive in a professional, competitive environment.
Part of the popular four-round Yas Racing Series, the TRD 86 Cup features alongside the Middle East Radical Cup, FG1000, NGK Racing Series, Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East and UAE Time Attack. New for Yas Racing Series 2016-17 is the Lamborghini Trofeo and TCR Middle East championship.
Al Tareq Al Ameri, CEO of Yas Marina Circuit, said: “A key objective of our motorsport activity at Yas Marina Circuit is to spur the development of talented young racing drivers.
“We work with our motorsport community to build up a framework to provide youngsters with a clear path from karting into professional championships. Hosting the FORMULA 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX is crucial to this effort. Being able to witness the excitement of a live Formula 1® race can spark a passion for motorsport that can potentially result in a future champion. Yas Marina Circuit will then make every effort to provide a means for that initial interest to be nurtured.”
