Building on its history of timeless African safaris, the iconic &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp has been completely rebuilt and proudly re-opens its doors to guests.

The classic camp was beautifully redesigned to further enhance its signature elements of romance and nostalgia, as well as to celebrate its panoramic views of the game-filled Mara plains.

As guests arrive at &Beyond Kichwa Tembo, they are instantly welcomed by the commanding view. The spacious guest areas incorporate split-level spaces where guests can relax and unwind. The different layers can accommodate high guest volumes in peak season, yet still provide a sense of intimacy during quieter times. The large windows invite the Mara inside, making it feel like part of the guest area. Guests can escape to the massage room to indulge in a relaxing treatment or browse the redesigned Safari Shop, which offers the finest Kenyan handicrafts. The rim-flow swimming pool, literally on the edge of the Mara, still boasts one of the world’s most extraordinary views.

With a strong emphasis on guest privacy, the new camp layout maximises the uninterrupted views ensuring that each tented suite enjoys its own private Mara experience. The 12 luxury tents retain the views they have always enjoyed, while 16 of the 28 superior tents, overlook the Mara with vistas as far as the eye can see.

Of the remaining 12 superior tents: four overlook the Sabaringo river with glimpses of the Mara; six are situated in the tranquil forest where guests can observe the brilliant birdlife and two feature sweeping views of the scenic escarpment made famous by the movie Out of Africa. Each tented suite has a comfortable built-in daybed where guests can relax and take in the spectacular scenery, as well as a large bathroom with double vanities, generous shower and separate “loo with a view”. Simple yet contemporary, the Maasai-inspired suites are elegant and timeless, firmly entrenching &Beyond Kichwa Tembo as the unrivalled luxury tented camp of its size in the greater Mara.

&Beyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp has three family suites of two interconnecting tents that are ideal for people travelling with children or small groups on safari together. Guests can opt to keep the passageway adjoining the two tents open or closed, meaning that children can get to and from their parent’s tent safely without going outside. When left closed, it still provides complete privacy for guests, with each tent boasting its own private entrance as well. Two family suites include a private outdoor area where guests can unwind, and the third family suite boasts Mara views and close proximity to the main guest area. As part of &Beyond’s WILDchild programme (offered at an additional cost), younger guests experience fascinating animal encounters and, under the care of their ranger, are encouraged to explore their surroundings, getting to touch, taste and interact with a captivating new world. As part of the programme, each child receives a specially designed range of goodies to keep them happily entertained.

For years, &Beyond Kichwa Tembo has delighted guests with its ever-popular “garden to table” lunch experience whereby guests select ingredients for their lunch directly from the lodge’s shamba (vegetable garden). The thriving shamba is now situated in an al fresco courtyard near the guest dining area and guests are invited to browse the rows of fresh vegetables and select whatever suits their taste buds. Chef George and his team will then take those vegetables to the interactive kitchen area and whip up a healthy, hearty and delicious lunch for guests using their requested ingredients. This is just one of the many memorable and unique guest experiences that puts &Beyond Kichwa Tembo in a league of its own.

The Masai Mara National Reserve is home to a vast amount of resident wildlife, as well as the annual Great Migration. The migratory wildebeest, zebra, kongoni and topi join abundant elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, lion and cheetah. Leopard and serval are frequently encountered, while endangered black rhino can be found in the dense bush thickets. The Mara River is also famed for its enormous crocodiles, which lay in wait for the wildebeest and zebra during the migration, when more than two million wildebeest and zebra move in search of prime grazing land. Although the exact routing and timing of the Great Migration differs from year to year, guests visiting &Beyond Kichwa Tembo between July and October will have a good chance of witnessing the dramatic Mara River crossings. &Beyond Kichwa Tembo is situated on a private wildlife concession enabling guests to enjoy interpretive nature walks and exhilarating night game drives. &Beyond’s sensitive off-road driving practices allow for up-close wildlife interactions.

The new camp makes use of the best available technology to reduce the use of fossil fuels, with 183 square metres (1 970 square feet) of solar panelling installed, capable of producing up to 9 400 litres (2 400 gallons) of hot water daily, saving 40 000 litres (10 560 gallons) of diesel per annum, which translates into a saving of 106 tons of CO2.
