The Australian Federation of Travel Agents has today announced details relating to the 4th year review of the ATAS Charter and Code of Conduct.

Jayson Westbury, Chief Executive, AFTA said, “The appointed reviewer, Mr Hank Spier has produced a detailed and extensive review of the ATAS Charter and I am pleased to announce that the Board has accepted 20 of the 29 Recommendations in full”.

A summary of some of the recommendations adopted by the AFTA Board include:

  • An overhaul of Attachment D Solvency Definitions which details the financial ratio tests that AFTA run to assess an applicant or renewing applicant;
  • Increasing the workforce development requirement from 30% to 50%;
  • Additions to the Code of Conduct obligations to incorporate Australian Consumer Law and the Guarantees;
  • A name change for the ATAS Code of Conduct independent review committee to ATAS Complaint Appeal Committee (ACAC); and
  • the removal of duplication from the ATAS Charter and its Attachments, reducing it from 77 pages down to a 45 page document.

The reviewers report, the Board response and the revised Charter are now available on the AFTA website here.

Revision 5 of the Charter is effective from 1 July 2018 and applies to all ATAS Participants from that date. The ATAS Charter represents to Australian consumers the professionalism and commitment that ATAS accredited agents embody. As an ATAS accredited agent, you agree to be bound by the ATAS Code of Conduct and its obligations and to comply with the complaint handling policy and review procedure implemented by AFTA. AFTA recently released data for 2017 on the outcomes and success of AFTA’s administration of this process.
