The sixth edition of the Rio Open, the largest tennis tournament in South America, begins on the 18th at Jockey Club Brasileiro, in the South side of Rio de Janeiro. For seven days, the public will see the play of names such as Austrian Dominic Thiem, number 8 in the ATP rankings, defending champion Diego Schwartzman and Italian Fabio Fognini, a favorite of the Brazilian public. The main singles tournament will feature three top 20 players, all experts on clay, the type of court of the Rio Open. Dominic Thiem was Roland Garros runner-up in 2018 and was the tennis player with the most wins on clay in 2018, with 30. The 25-year-old Austrian beat Rafael Nadal three times on clay, a rare feat shared only with Gaston Gaudio and Novak Djokovic. In 2017, he won the Rio Open without losing a single set. Thiem will make his fourth appearance in a row at the tournament.

Irreverent, Fabio Fognini is one of the Carioca fans favorites. At 31, the Italian is currently having one of the best times in his career. He is currently number 13 in the ATP rankings, his best position ever, after winning three titles in 2018. Fognini also has a history at the Rio Open. He is the player with the most wins in the tournament (11) and was runner-up in 2015 after beating Nadal in the semifinals.

One of the best in South America, Diego Schwartzman has also gotten fans in Rio de Janeiro. Standing only at 1.70m tall, “Peque” impresses with his heart and his skills. The Argentine won the last edition of the Rio Open and later reached the Roland Garros quarterfinals. “It is a privilege to have three of the world’s top clay players such as Thiem, Schwartzman and Fognini. It is a guaranteed show for all tastes,” says Luiz Carvalho, the tournament director.

It is worth mentioning that the Rio Open is the first ATP World Tour 500 in Brazilian history and is part of the selected group of 13 tournaments named ATP 500, and one of the 22 biggest tournaments in the ATP calendar, which credits it as the largest annual sporting event in Rio de Janeiro and one of the few ATP 500 tournaments in the world played on clay.

In addition to the matches, which take place in nine clay courts, including the Center Court with a 6,200-seat capacity, the public will have an interactive area with approximately 10,000 square meters, the Leblon Boulevard, with several attractions for those who visit the tournament, an area with stands, shops, food courts and entertainment options. The Rio Open Square will feature concerts and a giant TV screen.
