Rio de Janeiro will host, from February 15th to 17th, the 2019 Basketball Intercontinental Cup at Olympic Park’s Carioca 1 Arena, at Barra da Tijuca, West side of town. The competition, organized by FIBA Americas, will feature Flamengo (Brazil), Austin Spurs (USA), current NBA G-League (development league) champions, San Lorenzo (Argentina), reigning title holders of the DirecTV Liga de las Americas and AEK (Greece), reigning title holders of the Basketball Champions League.

“We are excited to bring the FIBA Intercontinental Cup back to the Americas and to celebrate this edition in the venue that hosted the 2016 Olympic Games,” said FIBA’s Secretary General, Andreas Zagklis, upon announcing the clashes of the tournament semifinals: San Lorenzo x AEK and Flamengo x Austin Spurs. The two semifinals will be on the 15th and the 17th is the date for the final round, with the third place game and the championship game.

“Having the NBA G League Austin Spurs playing in the Intercontinental Cup is a fantastic opportunity, not only for players to showcase their NBA talent, but also for the league itself to be represented internationally,” said Mark Tatum, NBA’s deputy commissioner.

For the president of the Brazilian Basketball Confederation, Guy Peixoto Jr., this exchange between traditional basketball nations is beneficial: “This is another initiative that contributes to the growth of Brazilian basketball, as it promotes an important interchange between strong and traditional basketball schools in the global scenario.”
