The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is the third best higher education institution in Latin America. This is what the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, a study produced by the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations, the largest public research body in Spain, points out. The Latin American ranking is led by the University of São Paulo (USP), also Brazilian, followed by Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is published twice a year. The study, that has been done for 15 years, considers the performance of universities around the world based on their web presence, visibility and impact on society. These indices consider universities’ commitment to teaching and research, perceived international prestige, and ties to the community, including industrial and economic sectors. It also considers the number of scientific articles written by its researchers among the 10% most cited.

In Brazil, the ranking is topped by the University of São Paulo (USP), followed by UFRJ. Rio de Janeiro’s other public universities, namely, UFF (10th), Uerj (15th), UFRRJ (49th) and Unirio (68th) also appear in the ranking. The study ranked more than 28,000 institutions worldwide. A new study is planned for the second half of 2019.
