Australia’s biggest-ever celebration of Harley-Davidson motorcycles returned to Wollongong at the weekend with full support from the NSW Government – and it proved so popular with locals and tourists, it could well become a permanent annual fixture.

The three-day Wollongong festival – Harley Days 2017 – was a rip-roaring success, with about 800 riders from Australia and New Zealand joining in the showpiece Thunder Run on Sunday morning.

NSW South Coast Harley Owners Group director Ken McDonald (known as Poppa Bear) told the Illawarra Mercury that about 10,000 people visited Wollongong’s Stuart Park over the three days.

“The whole event has been fantastic,” he told the paper.

The NSW Government threw its support behind Harley Days 2017 following the success of last year’s inaugural event.

“We know that our investment in events, such as Harley Days plays an important role in attracting more domestic and international visitors to our wonderful region which in turn, provides a significant boost for our local hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions,” said NSW Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra, Gareth Ward.

NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said the NSW Government has committed record funding to allow the State’s tourism and events industry to grow and grow.

“We are creating a tourism bonanza for our regions and will continue to work to ensure every part of New South Wales reaps the benefits of our record investment,” Marshall said.

“I am determined to turbocharge rural and regional tourism and our continued support for events such as Harley Days reinforces our commitment to ensuring our State remains number one.”
