Riverview Hotel: Sydney’s leading gastro pub gets Gault & Millau ‘2 Hats’

The Riverview Hotel in Balmain is not only one of Sydney’s oldest watering holes, it is a gastro pub and restaurant, boasting an a la carte restaurant, bar, lounge area and suite of private function spaces.

Owners and managers, Nicola Farrell and Licensee, James Queally, affectionately known among the locals as Jimmy, together boast the most industry experience of any hotel owners in the country.  Jimmy has thirty years of experience in the hotel and pub industry and Nicola comes from a long line of successful Irish hotel and pub owners.

Since purchasing the hotel in 2015, the dynamic duo has worked hard to implement a raft of improvements across the establishment including securing some of the industry’s best staff, from chefs to service personnel.

This week much of Nicola and Jimmy’s work paid off, with Gault & Millau awarding the Riverview Hotel 2 Hats in their 2018 Guide.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be given 2 Hats,” Nicola Farrell said today.

“The Gault & Millau Restaurant Guide is the global benchmark and recognition for chefs and restaurants.  They use a team of qualified restaurant inspectors and they dine anonymously.  They rate you against strict international standards.

“They are really thorough in their assessment of your dishes.  They look at quality and freshness of ingredients, use of seasonings, creativity and skill level of techniques and presentation, overall harmony and wow factor.”

The Riverview Hotel featured on page 329 of the 2018 Guide and was given 2 Hats – contemporary.  The review included the reviewers’ dining experience.

‘Navigate your way through the pub and head upstairs to the restaurant, where you are welcomed into a warm, cosy space with wooden tables set for service.

To start your meal you can’t go past the spanner crab, tomato nectar bubble, pea puree, wasabi  sand and sapphire it’s a wonderful marriage of flavours. The generous portion of spanner crab is smooth and creamy, while the samphire pops in your mouth, the wasabi sand provides a hit of warmth, and the tomato foam gives a delicious, fresh flavour. For main course, try the duck breast. Served medium rare, on a coffee cream, this delicious combination is further enhanced with rooibos tea-soaked cranberries and roasted chestnuts.

Tip! Grab a cocktail in the bar downstairs before moving up to the dining room’

“It is such a great honour to be awarded 2 Hats.   We were awarded 2 Hats last year.   Many establishments struggle to retain their hats but we have kept our focus on quality, service, creativity and creating a welcoming atmosphere – and it has paid off.   The hard work of everyone here at the Riverview Hotel has been recognised and we are very grateful to our head chef Murat Ekinci and our staff for their commitment and unwaivering passion,” Nicola added.

“Gault & Millau is a highly respected restaurant guide.  It is great for Australia to have an international independent review panel with a completely open perspective.”
