The skeletons are human. All other staff, such as waiters, reception personnel and doormen, are robots. The Pengheng Space Capsules Hotel is a space-themed hotel and the robot touch has taken it to a new level, Nanfang Insider reports.

The Pengheng Space Capsules Hotel is (as the name implies) a capsule hotel, a concept developed in Japan. Guests sleep in a space similar to a phone box (for those who remember phone boxes) but lying down rather than standing up. Capsules in the Pengheng Space Capsules Hotel are lit in an eerie shade of blue, publicity shots reveal. Eye masks could be useful.

Lack of human staff coupled with very small hotel rooms can equal big savings for guests. The Pengheng Space Capsules Hotel, which opened three months ago in the city’s Bao’an District, charges an astonishingly cheap 70 yuan (about AUD 12.50) per person per night. All that and plenty of robots. Hard to compete with that.

Guests have computer terminals to keep them amused and a locker (one per person) to stow belongings safely. A laundry room is available to human guests wishing to wash their underwear or socks. Robots don’t wear any.

Capsule hotels started in Japan but the concept has caught on quickly in China, with an example opening in Shanghai in 2011, near that city’s railway station. The Shanghai capsule hotel began with cabinet-sized rooms imported from Japan – each with a power point, clock, light, television and wireless internet.

The Shanghai hotel didn’t have robots, however. The Pengheng Space Capsules Hotel has fixed that deficiency.
