Rogue and confused kangaroos hop into Aussie airports

October 18, 2013 Airport, Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59Police locked down part of Melbourne Airport yesterday after a kangaroo jumped into the terminal and shocked passengers shopping in a pharmacy.

In Queensland meanwhile, a rogue male kangaroo at Bundaberg airport is worrying authorities who fear the eastern grey kangaroo may bounce across the runway and endanger flights. The Bundaberg maverick roo has evaded capture for two months, hopping around the airport. Attempts to trap it with Wildlife Victoria volunteers Ella Roundtree and Geoffrey Fuller with the captured kangaroo in the airport's pharmacy. Photo by Wildlife Victoriadogs have proved fruitless, the Guardian reported.

The large animal is regularly seen grazing near the aircraft hangar, accompanied by a couple of female kangaroo admirers. Some reports suggest that authorities are preparing to shoot the Bundaberg roo, an act which would outrage animal lovers.

In the Melbourne incident, wildlife rescue volunteers were called in to tranquilise and capture a distressed eastern grey male, thought to have been struck a glancing blow by a car. It hopped into an airport pharmacy.

Federal Police, alerted to the incident, promptly called Wildlife Victoria’s Emergency Response Service. Wildlife Victoria immediately dispatched two rescue volunteers (pictured) to offer assistance. Shortly after, the kangaroo was tranquillised and captured safely.

Cyrus, as the Melbourne animal has been named, is being assessed by a vet. The Melbourne airport terminal is located close to country favoured by kangaroos. One of the marsupials was found last year hopping around the fifth floor of the airport’s multi-storey car park.
