Rugby superstars to visit GOLD COAST in lead up to Brisbane Global Rugby Tens

December 7, 2016 Sports No Comments Email Email

In just over two months, over the weekend of February 11 and 12, Queensland is set to host the inaugural Brisbane Global Rugby Tens tournament at Suncorp Stadium, a blockbuster weekend of world class rugby featuring 14 of the best teams from around the globe. Ten Australian and New Zealand Super Rugby clubs and four elite invitational teams including famed French team Toulon playing for the first time ever in Queensland, the Blue Bulls, Samoa and the Panasonic Wild Knights will compete in 28 matches over the two days – all up, 16 hours of compelling live rugby that will also signal the beginning of the Super Rugby season.

TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, December 7, superstar All Blacks forward Jerome Kaino and rising star Damian McKenzie will visit the GOLD COAST, meet three young rugby fans (three young brothers from Main Beach no less in Henry, Ben and Daniel Waller), meet the Gold Coast’s iconic Surf Lifesavers, kick a footy on the beach and talk about the February event.

MEDIA ARE INVITED TO JOIN Jerome and Damian at MAIN BEACH, Southport Surf Lifesaving  Club at 10.30am, for a few kicks, some solid passes and to meet their local fans. The boys may even take a dip!

Jerome Kaino is a double World Cup winner who has played 76 tests for the All Blacks and plays for Auckland-based Super Rugby team The Blues. Damian McKenzie is one of world rugby’s most exciting young talents. A fleet-footed fullback who hails from New Zealand’s deep south but plays Super Rugby for the Waikato-based Chiefs, he is widely tipped to be one of the stars of the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens.

To be held annually, the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens is sanctioned by the Australian Rugby Union and New Zealand Rugby and will be broadcast live across Australia, New Zealand, UK, Japan, Africa, France and other major international markets.  Featuring a similar structure to the 15-a-side game but with more space on field for players to showcase their skills, Tens rugby is the perfect format for what will be a hugely entertaining launch of the Super Rugby season in Brisbane for at least the next four years.  Clubs playing include: Brumbies (Australia), Western Force (Australia), Melbourne Rebels (Australia), Queensland Reds (Australia), NSW Waratahs (Australia), Blues (New Zealand), Chiefs (New Zealand), Crusaders (New Zealand), Highlanders (New Zealand), Hurricanes (New Zealand), Blue Bulls (South Africa), Toulon (France), Panasonic Wild Knights (Japan).
