Ryanair departs but Amadeus gains Aussie accolade

Ryanair will end its partnership with Amadeus this Friday (15 December 2017) – but the people who work for the global distribution system in Australia are happy with it, which is one reason the GDS operator has just been named a Top Employer in Australia for the second consecutive year.

Amadeus and Ryanair will go their separate ways at the end of this week after being unable to negotiate terms for a commercial agreement renewal.

Ryanair said it would continue to serve travel agents through its existing GDS partnerships with Travelport and Sabre.

The Irish cut-price carrier’s chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs thanked Amadeus for its support during their GDS partnership, and said they would continue to work together through the Navitaire platform. Ryanair will also continue to steer customers to book directly on its own website:

MEANWHILE, the global Top Employers Institute granted a Top Employer in Australia accolade to Amadeus for creating employee offerings and employment practices that help people grow personally and professionally, and fostering a conducive work environment with innovative initiatives “that are forward-thinking and aligned with the company culture”.

Key facts and initiatives about Amadeus in Australia include:

  • 50% of vacancies in 2016/17 Financial Year were filled through internal promotions, and Amadeus’ voluntary turnover rate of 9.23%  is lower than the industry average.
  • Amadeus’ team includes people from more than 15 different countries, with an average tenure of 5.5 years. More than 40% of new hires in 2016/17 FY were women.
  • The team has updated six key HR policies to support business operations, and introduced a “New Inventors” policy recognising and rewarding innovative employees for the creation of new intellectual property ideas and generating product and solutions.

Amadeus introduced three key initiatives:

  • Leadership Link Ups – providing the opportunity for managers to share challenges, celebrate wins, and focus on best practice, whilst also offering the chance to learn from peers and gain insight into new ideas and perspectives.
  • Corporate Onboarding Program – a full day internal conference for all new comers and any existing Amadeus staff who want to refresh their knowledge.
  • Leading Through Change Program – supporting managers in building a healthy change culture within their teams, and facilitate the fast growth and change Amadeus will be experiencing in the next 1-2 years.

Top Employers Institute recognised the strides that Amadeus has made in its offices in Bangkok, Singapore, and Sydney, naming the company a Top Employer in all three countries. This is the first time Amadeus has gained the recognition in Singapore, and the second and third consecutive years it has received this award in Sydney and Bangkok respectively.

“This certification is awarded to the best employers in the world, namely organizations that demonstrate excellent employee offerings and employment practices that help people grow personally and professionally,” the Top Employers Institute said in an issued statement.

“Our survey found that Amadeus fosters a conducive work environment and offers innovative initiatives that are forward-thinking and aligned with their company culture.”

In Asia Pacific, Amadeus boasts a workforce of more than 4200 people from more than 40 nationalities.

Companies which participate in the Top Employers certification must undergo a robust assessment process and meet the required high standard in order to achieve certification. Top Employers Institute assessed Amadeus employee offerings based on talent strategy, workforce planning, learning and development, culture, compensation and benefits, amongst others.
