egtmedia59Which is the biggest international airline in the world? The answer, in terms of total international passengers carried in 2012, is low-cost carrier Ryanair.

So which are the world’s other big carriers? It depends how you measure them. The two prime measures are passengers carried, and scheduled passenger kilometres flown – passengers times distance, in other words.

The following statistics have been released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and are extracted from World Air Transport Statistics (WATS). They paint a  statistical picture of the airline industry in 2012.  The WATS digest draws from over half a century of experience to assemble the key figures of more than 180 airlines, including low-cost carriers.
