A new #HELPME Study has today revealed that ‘Safety, Security & Travel’ is not on the radar for Aussie travellers, despite over 100 insurance claims being received each day by Allianz Global Assistance relating to accidents, illness and unforeseen travel issues.

Coming top of the poll for the most searched travel topic on the internet over the last five years for Aussies was ‘Loyalty and Mileage Programmes’. #HELPME Study by Allianz Global Assistance, who covers millions of Australians every year with emergency medical assistance and Travel Insurance, analysed the most widely discussed travel-related topics by internet users in 11 countries[1] over the last five years.  The study highlights the great diversity of discussions among travellers on popular, high ranked traveller forums[2], with 59 different themes, featuring in the Top 10 of these 11 countries.

Although ‘Safety, Security and Travel’ did not feature in the Top 10, Australians were keen to find out about ‘Travelling Alone’, which came in 5th followed by ‘Looking for a Travel Companion’ at 8th position. In particular, women holidaymakers sought travel companions who knew the destination country and could provide guidance, reassurance and safety in numbers.

Bargains, rewards and value for money was a priority, with airline ‘Loyalty and Mileage Programmes’coming out as our highest searched topic over the last five years, which ranked 6th worldwide.  Not surprisingly, our geographical location saw ‘Air Transport & Airlines’ come in 2nd, with search terms encompassing airline companies, aeroplanes, airports and luggage requirements.

John Myler, CEO of Allianz Global Assistance commented: “The research from the #HELPME Study provides us with great insights into the diverse travel concerns and habits of Australian travellers.  It’s important to understand our customers and their concerns so we can create innovative, professional services that they trust.”

Other insights from the #HELPME study included:

  • Out of all countries analysed, Australians are the most willing to explore a ‘Road Trip’, which came in 3rd, however ‘Camping’ didn’t make the Top 10, whilst it ranked 5th in The World and 4th in Europe due to its cost effective nature.
  •  Out of 11 countries, Australia was the second most interested in ‘Travelling with Technology’coming in at 7th position, just behind USA (5th), whilst it didn’t make Top 10 in Europe.  Subjects within this space included mobile phone usage, GPS, internet usage, car transmissions and cameras.
  • When researching the next holiday, Aussies like to do their due diligence and ensure they don’t miss out, searching for ‘Must See Locations’, which came in 4th, followed by general ‘Travel Tips’ (9th). Interestingly, neither featured on the World’s or Europe’s Top 10.
  •  However Aussies join the Chinese (3rd), French (9th) and Polish (10th) to search for ‘Photo and Video Recommendations’ for holiday planning inspiration (10th in Australia).
  • Reflecting the tough economic climate, Aussies are looking for ‘Bargain Travel’ (6th) as much as Europeans (6th) and worldwide participants (4th).
  • Travelling with Parents or with Children was not a high priority for Aussies, with neither coming up in our Top 10s, despite Europeans searching ‘Travelling with Children’ as their 8th most popular concern. Chinese was the only market to search for ‘Travelling with Parents’, which was their number 1 issue.
  • Despite easy access to water, ‘Sea Travel & Cruises’ was low on the agenda coming in 17th.  Worldwide and European travellers ranked this 3rd, with economic pressures allowing for budget savvy consumers to maintain full control of their budgets, whilst travelling in comfort.
  • ‘Work Study and Live Abroad’ didn’t make a Top 10 appearance, despite coming 9th in the World, including topics such as travel visas, standard of living and accommodation.

Local Curiosities

Some discussion themes only appeared in a single country. The French appear to be the only ones concerned with ‘All-Inclusive Hotels and Packages’ and ‘Bike Tours’.  The Americans ask questions about ‘Car Rental’, while Poland is the only country to discuss ‘Mountain Holidays’ and ‘Holiday Camps’. The Spanish ask questions about ‘Guides, Drivers and Taxis’.  Not surprisingly the British ask questions about ‘Weather and Climate Conditions’, whilst Germans show an interest in ‘Diving’.
