An indispensable venue offering new discoveries for those seeking alternative sounds in Istanbul since 2010, Salon İKSV is as vibrant as ever in April. The artists to take the stage at Salon include Chad Lawson, Balmorhea, Everything Everything, Ecza Dolabı and Girls In Airports.

Chad Lawson / Wednesday-Thursday, 4-5 April, 21.30

Solo pianist from the USA, Chad Lawson discovered his passion for learning music when he was 5. He studied at the Berklee College of Music where he added the keyboard to his skills. For a few years, he was a part of the jazz trio Dear Dorothy which he established. The trio’s album was indispensable for second generation coffee shops, was even used in Dawson’s Creek. He toured with Julio Iglesias as his keyboardist, and decided that he needs to make his own music by himself. He was discovered by the founder of Windham Hill Records, William Ackerman and his debut solo album was released in 2009. His 2015 album The Chopin Variations was number one in many classical music lists from Billboard to iTunes. His music is used in a variety of media including TV series such as “The Walking Dead”, “Vampire Diaries”, and commercials for Microsoft and Delta Airlines. Chad Lawson will be on the Salon İKSV stage for a meditative session that combines classical music vibes with jazz improvisations.

Balmorhea / Friday, 6 April, 22.00

Instrumental/experimental band from Texas, Balmorhea was formed in 2006 by Rob Lowe and Michael Muller. They toured around the U.S. and Europe many times and became an essential band for post-rock and indie fans. The band shared the stage with many, such as Fleet Foxes, Mono, Tortoise, Bear in Heaven, Sharon Van Etten, Damien Jurado, and Here We Go Magic. They graced the Salon İKSV stage in 2013 and 2014, and became one of the favourites of the Salon crowd. This April, they will be playing songs from their new album, Clear Language on the Salon İKSV stage.

Cozy Powell Tribute Night / Saturday, 7 April, 22.30

Legendary drummer Cozy Powell is commemorated on the 20th anniversary of his death. It’s been 20 years since we lost Cozy Powell –the drummer of such legendary rock bands as Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Whitesnake– whose untimely death in 1998 deeply saddened the rock world. Put together and MC’d by Alpay Şart, musicians from the Gitarizma project will accompany esteemed rock drummers Bülent Akbay, Mert Alkaya, Koray Bali, Arbak Dal, and Tevhid Özdemir on this special night. A special tribute to Powell from five big name drummers who hardly ever play together will grace the Salon İKSV stage on 7 April.

XJAZZ: Studnitzky KY Organic / Friday, 13 April, 21.30

German jazz trumpeter and pianist Studnitzky KY Organic recognized for his virtuosity in trumpet. He became one of the most important virtuosos in Germany and took the stage in many venues and festivals alongside such names as Jazzanova, Nils Landgrens Funk Unit, and Mezzoforte and Wolfgang Haffner. He received the ECHO Jazz Award for his project MEMENTO. His biggest inspiration is his cosmopolitan life which rotates between airports, stages and hotels. He will be on the Salon İKSV stage as part of XJAZZ with his KY project through which he breathes life to minimalist but multilayered sounds.

XJAZZ: Peter Broderick / Before: Gülşah Erol / Saturday, 14 April, 21.30

American songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, member of Efterklang Peter Broderick was born in Oregon. He also grew up in Oregon, and was a session player for M. Ward, Laura Gibson, and Dolorean. He crossed the ocean in 2007 and arrived in Denmark and subsequently joined Efterklang. As he accompanied the band on several tours, he recorded many solo albums. Meeting Nils Frahm and Greg Haines when he moved to Berlin for a couple of years opened him the doors to Erased Tapes. Through this record label, known to be the nest for minimalist and experimental music, he released many albums as well as soundtracks for films, dance, and documentaries. He is compared to Max Richter and Ólafur Arnalds, and even though their music share similar moods, Broderick is more experimental and unpredictable. He will be on the Salon İKSV stage as part of XJAZZ.

Colin Stetson Ex Eye / Wednesday, 18 April, 21.30

American virtuoso of sax and wind instruments Colin Stetson Ex Eye played jazz-rock for a long time in Transmission and People’s Bizarre. He recorded albums and toured with such names as Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Feist, Bon Iver, My Brightest Diamond, David Byrne, Sinéad O’Connor, LCD Soundsystem, The National, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. He released his first solo album New History Warfare Vol.1 in 2008 and followed it up with Vol. 2: Judges (2011) and Vol. 3: To See More Light (2013). The latter two scored high with critics and received nominations for Polaris Music Awards. He had been on the Salon İKSV stage for the second time while touring to support Never Were the Way She Was, his 2015 collaboration with Arcade Fire’s violinist Sarah Neufeld. He scored the 2016 film Outlaws and Angels and released All This I Do For Glory in 2017. After a three-year break, he is on the Salon İKSV stage once again, this time with Ex Eye, his collaborative project with drummer Greg Fox, which combines jazz and metal and has an 8.1 score from Pitchfork.

Everything Everything / Saturday, 21 April, 22.30

Mancunian math-rock and experimental pop band Everything Everything was formed in late Noughties to defy what is expected from a group of guitar-playing Mancunian white dudes. They released their debut album Man Alive in 2010, crashed all the year-end best of lists, showered in praise from many music journals and almost snatched the prestigious Mercury award from the hands of heavyweight PJ Harvey. The success of the album resulted in a supporting spot on a tour headlined by Snow Patrol and Muse in 2012. Their sophomore effort Arc in 2013 was proof of their competent sound. Band leader Jonathan Higgs spent the next two years nestled at home listening to the broadcast news and came up with the lyrics for their third album Get to Heaven, released in 2015. By contrast with Higgs’ description of the album as “bible of horror” the set was packed with dynamic songs like Distant Past and No Reptiles. They were inspired by early Warp Records bands such as Autechre, Aphex Twin, and Boards of Canada they leaned towards electronica on the genre scale with their 2017 album A Fewer Dream. They scored high marks with each of their four albums, the band saluted their Istanbulite fans at the final Rock’n Coke in 2013 and again at One Love in 2015. They return to Istanbul after three years to play at Salon İKSV for the first time.

Ecza Dolabı / Friday, 27 April, 21.30

A band of professionals from the business world who love music and give new flavor to timeless songs that have made their way into our hearts. They cover popular songs from Turkey and abroad – mainly rock – from the 1960s to the present and approach their music-making with the same combination of pleasure and professionalism as they do their managerial responsibilities. Ecza Dolabı, formed in 2010, has performed in a wide range of venues to raise funds for social responsibility projects. This time, Ecza Dolabı is rocking at Salon İKSV to raise funds for İKSV.

Elif Çağlar “The Art of Time” / Saturday, 28 April, 22.30

Garanti Caz Yeşili: Uluslararası Caz Günü, Girls in Airports / Monday, 30 April, 21.30

Danish band that fuses jazz, indie and folk Girls in Airports released five albums since 2011. They are praised for their improvisational work that breaks geographical boundaries and genres. Their latest album which comprises of the live recordings of their three concerts in Germany in 2017 is a solid reference for their captivating live performances. According to All About Jazz, their music is a blend of King Crimson’s pastoral touches, Pink Floyd’s early instrumental phase, Brian Eno’s ambient spaces, and the dark saxophones of David Bowie and Donny McCaslin’s swan song Blackstar.
