Salute the Sea at Barangaroo Welcome Celebration in October

The Barangaroo Delivery Authority, on behalf of the NSW Government, invites Sydneysiders and visitors to Sydney’s sensational new Harbour foreshore park, Barangaroo Reserve, for the next instalment of the Barangaroo Welcome Celebration.


The new October program explores the theme of ‘sea’ in honour of Barangaroo’s 200-year history of maritime activity. It begins with the spectacular Giant Picnic on Sunday, 4 October (11am-5pm) and includes a packed program of live music, entertainment and art – all themed around ‘Sea’, with food and drink also on sale in the park.

The ‘Sea’ Celebration will continue during weekends in October.

Gill Minervini, Welcome Celebration Creative Director, said: “The October Giant Picnic is a huge celebration of Sydney’s vibrant maritime culture and Barangaroo’s industrial history. The 4 October Celebration features a fantastic program of never-to-be-repeated picnics with top chefs, specially commissioned art, sea-themed talks, craft workshops for the whole family and amazing entertainment by some of Australia’s best live musicians.”

Everyone is invited to bring a picnic blanket to the October Giant Picnic where Alex Herbert, Food Curator for the Barangaroo Welcome Celebration, will bring together some of Sydney’s finest chefs to serve a delectable feast of signature picnic-style dishes on Stargazer Lawn. Food and beverage highlights include:

  • My Kitchen Rules judge Colin Fassnidge and Carla Jones from the 4 Fourteen in Surry Hills will serve pulled suckling pig rolls ($12);
  • Seafood specialist Joel Best of Bondi’s Best dishes up traditional fish and chips ($10) and ‘Walkers’ Tuna Sashimi ($12).
  • Smoked chicken and hot sauce by Luke Powell from LP’s Quality Meats;
  • A one-off collaboration between John Susman of Fishtales and Michael Shafran of Brooklyn Boy Bagels;
  • A collaboration between not-for-profit outfit Two Good Co, Brasserie Bread, and Pepe Saya, preparing two fresh spring salads with fresh bread and butter ($12).
  • Matt Moran’s Aria Catering, and Bourke Street Bakery will dish up classic affordable family picnic fare inside the Cutaway.
  • Beverages from Newtown’s Young Henrys, Snowy Mountains’ Batlow Cider Co and Cumulus Wines from the NSW Orange wine region.

Free live music will evoke the bustling atmosphere of the working harbour throughout the day with Bluesfest favourite Busby Marou, gypsy-fusion band Lolo Lovina, original Australian swing from The Cope Street Parade, sea shanties from Redfern Shanty Club, high energy beats from Crusty Suitcase Band featuring percussionist and composer Ben Walsh, the toe-tapping and shoe-shuffling quartet Sousaphonics, one man band Uptown Brown, plus tunes from Gramophone Man, Sugar Bowl Hokum and modern day bluegrass band The Morrisons.

Throughout the month, the Cutaway, the massive cultural space built inside the headland, will house an experiential multi-media art installation by ESEM Projects entitled Arrivals and Departures.

The work by ESEM Projects – Dr Sarah Barnes and Michael Killalea – will bring to life the social history of the site that was once the heart of Sydney’s docklands and tell the many stories of growing up in the area as well as how some of Sydney’s immigrants first arrived here.

Arrivals and Departures will comprise a series of brightly coloured shipping containers creating a roomful of mini-galleries each telling a different compelling and entertaining story. Barns and Killalea will discuss their approach to creating their experiential installation as part of the talks series in the Cutaway at 12pm and 2pm.

Visitors can also enjoy a harbour view with the tall ships, the James Craig, the Australian-built replica of James Cook’s HM Bark Endeavour and Governor Bligh moored offshore. Tours of the James Craig, the only surviving Tall Ship from the golden age of sail still to be regularly seen in Sydney Harbour, will be available during the day, and tug boat water displays will also be on offer from the Shirley Smith tug boat.

The family fun will continue with Hotbed Designs Printmaking craft workshops for children in the Waranara Room, the mezzanine floor of the Cutaway, where families can create their very own Harbour Hand Waver.

Open weekends in October
Barangaroo continues the Celebration throughout weekends in October, with free live performances by Sousaphonics, The Cope Street Parade and Gramophone Man, a series of talks in the Cutaway focusing on the maritime history of Barangaroo, site tours and food from Sydney’s best food trucks.
