Wan Chai’s newest neighbourhood addition, Samsen, is now open in the afternoon with a Thai Set Lunch served Monday through Saturday from 12:30pm-2:30pm. Chef Adam Cliff has put together a simple Thai Set Lunch that includes choices between five signature mains served with a Thai Iced Lime Tea, Thai Iced Milk Tea or Thai Iced Coffee starting at HKD108.
New to the menu and only available during lunch, the Wok Fried Wagyu Beef with Holy Basil, Thai Garlic and Chili served with crispy fried egg on fragrant jasmine rice (HKD 128) is expected to be an instant hit with lunch-goers.
“We’ve wanted to open for lunch for the last month, but it was really important for Bella and I to make sure that both our front of house and kitchen team felt 100% comfortable with dinner service first. Our goal for Samsen is to deliver consistent level of food quality and service by serving fresh and authentic Thai street food. For now we are offering one special new dish during the lunch, but in the coming months we hope to slowly add in a dish here and there”, says Chef Owner Adam Cliff.
Samsen’s Stir Fried Fat Noodles served with Sliced Chicken with Thai Iced Coffee
Always in high demand for dinner, Samsen’s signature Wagyu Beef Boat Noodles (HKD128) will also be available at lunch. This bowl of thin rice noodles starts with a dark rich broth simmered with a handful of fragrant spices for hours every morning at the shophouse. Upon ordering, the noodles are precisely flash-cooked and each bowl is generously topped with strips of Wagyu beef, braised beef chunks and meatballs.
As part of the set lunch selection that comes with a main and drink, lunch-goers can also opt for Chef Adam’s signature Wok Fried Rice of Crab Meat with spring onions, egg and crispy garlic (HKD108) or go for Thai staple of Phat Thai Noodles of Tiger Prawns(HKD118) or the Stir Fried Fat Noodles with Sliced Chicken served in a sweet Oyster sauce with egg and Chinese kale (HKD 108).
For a little extra noshing, diners can choose one of Samsen’s simple, but delicious sides including: Fried Marinated Pork Collar with a house-made tomato & chili dip (HKD68) and flash-fried kaffir lime leaves; savoury Crispy Fish Skins (HKD16); and soft-boiled Fried Eggs with Chili Jam that have a yolky soft center, garnished with crispy shallots, crispy garlic and coriander (HKD68).
Samsen is inspired by a Thai vintage shophouse
Satisfy a sweets craving by ordering one of Samsen’s traditional Thai desserts. The crowd pleaser for the flavour combination of sweet and salty is the Pandanus Coconut Dumplings in a warm, salted coconut cream (HKD52). For a lighter and refreshing dessert, Thai “Red Rubies” is made of water chestnuts served on shaved coconut ice with young coconut meat and pomegranate (HKD48).
At lunch, Samsen offers an array of beverage choices a la carte including fresh fruit juices, bottled beers, bottled wines and fizzy house specialties: Calamansi Lime & Salted Plum Soda (HKD42), Lychee & Lemongrass Plum Soda (HKD42) and Fresh Thai Lime Soda(HKD38).
