Sanctuary Retreats unveiled its newly refurbished Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer yesterday, along with details of family-friendly sailings and themed departures, as Sanctuary’s Melbourne-based director of sales, Australia and New Zealand, Michael McCall, outlined new developments to industry media.

Speaking at Sydney’s Spice Temple restaurant, McCall said Yangzi Explorer had one crew member for every passenger, an unprecedented ratio. The ship’s 38 deluxe cabins were the largest entry-level cabins on the famed Chinese river. The boutique ship, furnished with a contemporary design while maintain local Chinese influences, also offers 20 suites and 4 specialty suites.

As well as the dedicated and personalised service provided by the 1:1 crew-to-passenger ratio, the highest on the river, all cabins and suites came with private balconies, McCall said.

The new interiors were designed by Premchit Chitrabamrung (Teenie), who was the interior designer for Sanctuary Retreats’ luxury all-suite ship Sanctuary Ananda in Myanmar. Inspiration was drawn from the local region, reflected in the contemporary design. All decorative items including artwork, cushions and furniture were sourced from local Chinese markets.

The 20 suites and 38 deluxe cabins have been upgraded in a contemporary Chinese style, with artwork, stylish textiles and soft furnishings and “silver-leaf” wallpaper designs featuring a “mudan”, or peony, which is native to the Yangtze region. The Celestial and Imperial Suites, which are the largest specialty suites, have also been updated reflecting a Colonial Chinese design.

Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer offers 3-night cruises from Chongqing to Yichang and 4-night cruises from Yichang to Chongqing, bringing guests as close as possible to central China’s most captivating landscapes. Itineraries provide insights into history-steeped cities and rural stories found along Asia’s longest river.
