São Paulo Convention & Visitors Bureau presents: Palácio Tangará Opening 2017

With an exceptional location in the heart of the economic capital of Brazil – São Paulo – Palácio Tangará will open its doors in the second quarter 2017. Built in the surroundings of the highly regarded Burle Marx Park, whose gardens were designed by Roberto Burle Marx, the hotel will offer 141 spacious guestrooms – including 59 suites – all with beautiful views overlooking the park.Palácio Tangará which takes its name from the paradise ‘Tanager of Amazonia’ (Tangara Chilensis) a brilliantly multi-colored songbird, will also feature 9 private meeting rooms, including a ballroom for up to 530 guests with terraces overlooking the park. The fitness center and spa will have their own private garden, and there will be indoor and outdoor swimming pools as well as a kid’s club.

Philippe Perd, Chief Project Development Officer of Oetker Collection, has spent the past year supporting the design process, commented that once completed, Palácio Tangará will be São Paulo’s first true “masterpiece hotel” and a proud addition to the Collection.

Celso David do Valle has been appointed by Franck Marrenbach, CEO Oetker Collection, as Managing Director of Palácio Tangará and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, world famous chef, will drive the hotel’s dining experiences and there will be a signature restaurant, chef’s table, a bar, a wine cellar, a lobby and lounge bar, all with outdoor terraces.

The History
A veritable oasis in the center of São Paulo’s vibrant urban landscape, the Burle Marx Park has no shortage of natural gifs to offer; its sprawling 10,8 hectares of lush greenery and clear lagoons are home to a vast array of tropical Atlantic plants and exotic bird species. But perhaps its most defining feature is not in its flora but is in the signature aesthetic imprinted onto them by the late Roberto Burle Marx, the man whose name is synonymous with the art of landscape architecture. With the park’s terrain as his canvas, the Brazilian architect created avant-garde and modern visuals using the most timeless material of all: nature itself.

“A garden is a complex of aesthetic and plastic intentions”, he once said. “The plant is, to a landscape artist, not only a plant – rare, unusual, ordinary or doomed to disappearance – but it is also a color, a shape, a volume or an arabesque in itself.”

And certainly, Burle Marx was very well in touch with this living medium through which he expressed himself. As an activist and ecologist, he was one of the first to call for the preservation to rainforests; as a collector, he would frequently go into the Brazilian countryside and into jungles in search of rare plant species (there are said to be around 50 different plants that are named after him). But, surprisingly enough, it was not in Brazil that the Rio de Janeiro native had discovered his passion for local plants. It was actually during a visit to a botanical garden in Berlin (where he was studying painting and watercolor techniques) in 1928 that he first developed a fascination for his home country’s flora. It would also be in the German capital that he would be introduced to his modernist aesthetic, finding major influences in the Cubist movement and Abstractionism.

Ground-breaking in its style, the asymmetrical and graphic nature of his garden designs, as well as the use of exotic plants, distinctly set him far apart from the classical European gardening that was dominant when he first started. Other distinguishing features of Burle Marx’s gardens include contrasting hues and textures – succinctly captured in his checkerboard-patterned laws – and the presence of geometrically tiled walls. His trademark curvilinear shapes could be seen in many public places such the park of Aterro do Flamengo and Avenida Atlântica’s walkway in Rio de Janeiro and Palácio do Itamaraty’s gardens in Brasília. But his unique artistic vision was also highly expressed in the many private gardens commissioned to him.
Before becoming an integral component of São Paulo’s leisurely life, the Burle Marx Park itself served as a private garden in the 1940s. Wealthy businessman Baby Pignatari had a house built on the property for his then-fiancée, commissioning Burle Marx to design the gardens. Eventually, when the couple separated, the estate remained untouched for several years until the 1990s when – due to its large area of vegetation, natural forest, and the presence of Burle Marx’ remaining works – it was converted into the park that it is today.

This patch of paradise now serves as the setting for another work of art: Oetker Collection’s first masterpiece hotel in South America, Palácio Tangará. Sergio Santana, the hotel’s landscape designer describes the hotel’s landscape design as an ‘elegant garden that makes the transition between the architecture and the native Mata Atlântica of the Burle Marx Park that surrounds it’. Under the supervision of General Manager Celso David do Valle, the project has been entrusted to architectural firms B+H Architects, Bick Simonato and PAR Arquitetura. Architects Luis Ricardo Bick and William Simonato and architect Patricia Anastassiadis discuss how the serene spaces, stunning surroundings, and the exhilarating energy of São Paulo are set to make the hotel an irresistible retreat.

Gastronomy: Meet the head Chef
World-renowned chef-restaurateur Jean-Georges Vongerichten will lead the hotel’s dining experiences which will include signature Restaurant Tangará, a chef’s table, a bar, a wine cellar, lounge & terrace, room service and banquet facilities. The appointment of Jean-Georges follows a successful partnership between Oetker Collection and Jean-Georges at Eden Rock St Barths.

Jean-Georges Vongerichten owns and operates over 30 restaurants worldwide in cities including New York, Paris, Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong. The partnership with Oetker Collection at Palácio Tangará will be his first venture in South America.

Accommodation
The Prestige Room Terrace

The Prestige Room Terrace showcases stylish décor with soft contemporary accents. The entrance hall leads to a supremely comfortable room bathed in natural daylight, appointed with a dining table for two and a large writing desk. All these rooms open to a terrace where guests can enjoy a cool drink and some are furnished for private dining. Some terraces also have breathtaking views of the Burle Marx Park. There is a walk-in closet and a generously sized bathroom with twin vanity unit, separate glass shower and bathtub.

The Prestige Room
The Prestige Room showcases stylish décor with soft contemporary accents. The entrance hall leads to a supremely comfortable room bathed in natural daylight, appointed with a dining table for two and a large writing desk. All rooms open to a balcony, some with breathtaking views of the Burle Marx Park. There is a walk-in closet and a generously sized bathroom with twin vanity unit, separate glass shower and bathtub. Some Prestige Rooms with King size beds can be interconnected with twin double bed rooms.

The Prestige Suite
Enjoy 109 square meters (1176 square feet) of pure luxury. The master bedroom of the Prestige Suite is filled with light, it has a spacious walk-in closet and there is an additional wardrobe in the hall. A large and elegant living area has a dining table for six and a bar area, this space is beautifully designed for private dinner parties. There is a sofa bed in the lounge area, in all a perfect family hideaway amidst nature. In each suite, there is an oversized master bathroom with a twin vanity unit, separate glass shower and bathtub, as well as the additional guest bathroom with a glass shower. The Prestige Suite opens to a furnished terrace where guests can enjoy a drink and the scenery. The suite connects to either a Prestige Room or a Deluxe Room with either twin doubles or one king size bed.

Frank Marrenbach, CEO Oetker Collection
His longstanding career with the Oetker Group began in 1997 when he was appointed Resident Manager of Brenners Park Hotel & Spa in Baden-Baden which he has managed as Executive Director since 2000. Prior to this, Frank Marrenbach worked in some of Europe’s most prestigious luxury hotels, such as The Berkeley in London and Le Crillon in Paris.

Over the years, Frank Marrenbach has received various accolades, including the “Gault Millau Hotelier of the Year Award” in 2003.

During his employment, Frank Marrenbach obtained a Bachelor’s Degree (B.B.A.) from the Graduate School of Business Administration (GSBA) in Zurich and a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) from the State University of New York in Albany, USA in October 2003. In 2005, he became a member of the Executive Committee of the Leading Hotels of the World and was its Vice Chairman from 2010 to 2016.

Since 2008, as CEO, Frank Marrenbach has been in charge of the Oetker Hotel Management Company based in Baden-Baden and, in this role, is concerned with expanding the Oetker Collection.

Philippe Perd

Philippe Perd, Senior Vice-President Operations and Project Development
Mr. Philippe Perd joined the Hotel de Crillon in Paris as Resident Manager and was rapidly promoted on a position of Hotel Manager the following year. He left Paris in May 2001 when he was appointed as Managing Director of the Château Saint-Martin & Spa on the hills above Vence.

In 2005, Philippe Perd took over the management of the unique and legendary Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes with the aim to develop a real synergy between the two properties located on the French Riviera.

November 2009 – Philippe Perd graduated from Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program.

October 2011 – He was awarded by the Deputy Mayor of the city of Antibes and the Sous-Préfet with one of the highest recognitions in France: “la Médaille de Bronze du Tourisme”, which honours the services he rendered to Tourism and the quality of service he provided in the Hospitality Industry.

November 2012 – He graduated from Inchbald School Design in London with the Certificate in Interior Design.

2013 – Philippe Perd became Senior Vice-President Operations and Project Development. His new assignments include the conceptual development of new hotel projects such as L’Apogée Courchevel in 2013, The Lanesborough in London in 2015 and Palácio Tangará project.

Celso David do Valle General Manager

Celso David do Valle, General Manager
Aged 58, Celso is a well-known personality in the hotel world of South America. Graduated from Cornell/CEATEL in Hotel Management, he has 30 years of experience as general manager with various companies, including resorts, business hotels and school hotel. His latest position was General Director at Belmond Hotel das Cataratas.

Reporting to Frank Marrenbach, CEO Oetker Collection, Celso will be in charge of the opening of Palácio Tangará the latest masterpiece of the Oetker Collection. Located in Burle Marx Park, a tropical forest, this property will be unique, an ‘urban oasis’, in the middle of the financial capital of South America.
