In 2016, organizers held the event in Jackson Square; after reviewing festival outcomes and attendee feedback, the decision to return to the original location was clear.

“As we celebrate the Festival’s 17th anniversary – and Louis Armstrong’s birthday – we are thrilled to return to the Mint. The newly opened Jazz Museum will help us pay homage to Satchmo, plus shade tents and onsite, air-conditioned bathrooms will keep fans comfortable,” said Emily Madero, President & CEO of French Quarter Festivals, Inc., the organization that produces Satchmo SummerFest.

Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron celebrates the life, legacy, and music of New Orleans’ native son, Louis Armstrong. What began in 2001 as a way to commemorate the musician’s 100th birthday, Satchmo SummerFest has grown into a three day event filled with entertainment, education, and fare from some of New Orleans’ most notable restaurants. Satchmo SummerFest also showcases New Orleans’ most important indigenous traditions, such as a Sunday morning Jazz Mass at the historic St. Augustine Church in Treme; a traditional second line parade; and traditional jazz dance lessons. Other special events include opening reception at the historic Omni Royal Orleans Hotel (the official hotel of Satchmo SummerFest) and a Trumpet Tribute sponsored by Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen to close the festival. A modest $5 daily admission helps support local musicians and pay for the event.

Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron will feature the music of over 100 artists representing New Orleans’ finest traditional and contemporary jazz musicians and brass bands. Musicians are encouraged to submit an application, which will be available online until May 31. The search is also underway for the 2017 Poster Artist. Satchmo SummerFest is produced by French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (www.fqfi.org), the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which also produces French Quarter Festival in April and Christmas New Orleans Style in December. French Quarter Festivals, Inc. promotes the Vieux Carré and the City of New Orleans through high quality special events and activities that showcase the culture and heritage of this unique city, contribute to the economic well-being of the community, and instill increased pride in the people of New Orleans.
