Scenic Azure has ended its first season on a high after being awarded the golden certificate for excellent food hygiene standards from the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) – an internationally recognised system for reducing the risk of safety hazards in food.
The ship and its crew was awarded the gold certificate at the end of the first year of sailing, making Scenic the only cruise company to have won the award on the Douro River.
Commenting on the win, Maria Andrada, General Manager of Scenic Portugal, said: “We are very proud of our success which is all down to the hard work the entire crew put in this year. We have achieved this high standard in only seven months of operation on the Douro. This is very unusual to happen, there is no other company in Portugal that has achieved this prize in such a short time of activity so we are very excited to be the first.”
The crew was trained by an external company before the start of the sailing season in excellent levels of control in the handling, preparation and serving of all food related services as well as the practice of hygiene and safety at work. Scenic was then subjected to four surprise inspections where all the different departments requiring those standards were inspected and analysed based on food, pool water, plumbing and air conditioning. Each of these categories were successfully scored and Scenic Azure was awarded with the golden certificate.
