From stomach upsets to car accidents, Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI) has revealed the top 10 medical claims of 2017, with some of the highest paid claims collectively reaching over $2 million.SCTI paid out over $549,000 when a customer was injured in the US as the result of a serious motor vehicle accident, one of the largest medical claims of 2017. Illness abroad also made the list of top 10 claims.

Chris White, SCTI CEO, says Aussies choosing to travel overseas without insurance who then require medical care may find themselves substantially out of pocket.

“Unfortunate incidents can happen to anyone, at any time, regardless of how cautious or experienced a traveller they may be. The price of travel insurance is just a tiny fraction of the costs that can result from these incidents.

“If you buy your insurance as soon as you book your flights and accommodation, you can also make a claim if you get sick before your trip and are unable to fly. We see many claims from customers who have to cancel their trip due to an unexpected illness, some as much as $30,000!”

White says that some hospitals in the US, a country with some of the highest medical care costs in the world, may request a large deposit before they will even start providing treatment.

“This is one of the key areas where having travel insurance is important, as we can help eliminate the need to pay this deposit. If you end up in a US hospital and are asked to pay a deposit, you should call our emergency assistance team as soon as possible, as they may be able to negotiate with the hospital on your behalf.”

“We also co-ordinate emergency medical evacuations, can keep immediate family advised of the situation and provide payment guarantees to hospitals or emergency clinics. We’re proud to offer around the clock emergency assistance for customers who need urgent help. Our expert team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, no matter where in the world you are.”
