SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium puts fin-ishing touches to Shark Reef Snorkel

Gearing up for launch on 6 May, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium Marine Biologists and construction crew have installed the final pieces for Shark Reef Snorkel – all surrounded by sharks and underwater!

Piece-by-piece, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium staff used a mechanical hoist to lift three sections of the Shark Reef Snorkel enclosure into the top of the aquarium’s Great Barrier Reef Oceanarium. Two segments were then assembled on the dive platform prior to their submersion into shark infested waters. Finally, the last piece was installed by divers beneath the water.

“The perspex enclosure for Shark Reef Snorkel is so large that we had to hoist it into the aquarium in three separate pieces to then assemble it in the water,” said Courtney Davis, Marine Biologist for SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium. “For the last few months we have been training the marine animals in our Great Barrier Reef Oceanarium to swim around the new snorkel enclosure, and now they don’t seem to mind the installation”.

The new Shark Reef Snorkel experience will give brave adventurers as young as five years old up-close-and-personal access to one of nature’s most magnificent but misunderstood creatures of the sea for the first time.

The thrilling and fully immersive experience will submerge snorkelers beneath the water within a Perspex enclosure with five species of sharks, sawfish and tropical fish circling just metres away.

The see-through enclosure accommodates up to four snorkelers at one time and offers clear 360 degree views right to the bottom of the two million litre Oceanarium so the whole family can feel the beauty of the world’s largest coral reef right in the heart in Sydney.

The one and a half hour experience includes a full orientation with insights into the species residing inside the Great Barrier Reef Oceanarium, 20-minutes in the water with an instructor as well as all equipment and full entry to the aquarium for $95 per person. A family or group ticket of four people is also available for $350. The encounter is available every day including weekends at 10am, 12.30pm and 3pm.

Shark Reef Snorkel is just one of many larger than life experiences that kids can enjoy as part of Shark Mission at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium. Designed to challenge false perceptions of sharks as monsters of the sea, the interactive exhibit offers visitors the chance to marvel at these fascinating creatures in the Shark Nursery and Shark Valley tunnels, as well as the opportunity to learn about shark anatomy and habitats with giant interactive touch screens, and so much more.
