March 23, 2017 Whats On No Comments Email Email

Ever wondered about the backstories behind the people influencing our culture? What was life like for Australian comedy wunderkid Josh Thomas growing up? How did Radiolab founder Jad Abumrad’s love of audio lead to the creation of  one of the world’s most respected podcasts? Why was Julie Snyder – co-creator This American Life’s chart-topping spin-off Serial – so sure about working with Ira Glass the moment she first heard him on the radio?

Season Two reveals how personal stories have revolutionised storytelling.

The Sydney Opera House today announced Season Two of its hugely successful podcast series It’s A Long Story, released fortnightly at midnight AEST from Monday 3 April 2017. Last week, It’s A Long Story was named as a finalist in the Documentary and Storytelling division of Australia’s inaugural Castaway Awards (announced 1 April).

Award-winning Australian broadcast journalist and host of It’s A Long Story Season One and Two, Hamish Macdonald, returns to uncover the most interesting stories behind the careers of some of contemporary culture’s most  respected producers, critics and artists, unpacking their biggest influences and formative moments that led them to  the Opera House stage.

Head of Contemporary Performance at the Sydney Opera House and founder and curator of BINGEFEST, Danielle Harvey, says: “The Sydney Opera House welcomes some of the world’s most fascinating artists and thinkers through its stage door every day of the week. It’s A Long Story is an attempt to go even further than behind-the-scenes – to delve into the childhood and the hopes and dreams of the world’s best minds – and capture these stories on a podcast accessible to anyone around the world. We’ve been blown away by the success of Season One, with 60,000 downloads (and counting) plus re-broadcast on Radio National Summer Breakfast. The five episodes in Season Two were recorded at our inaugural BINGEFEST in December 2016 and we can’t wait for you to enjoy them!”
Five interviews were recorded in the Sydney Opera House’s Intel Broadcast Studios for Season Two, featuring the following guests:

  • Jad Abumrad, composer, producer and recipient of the Macarthur Foundation’s ‘genius grant’ in 2011, who co-founded the syndicated public radio program and podcast Radiolab in 2005 with Robert Krulwich;
  • Executive Producer and co-creator of the multi-award winning podcast Serial and former Senior Producer of This American Life, Julie Snyder. Snyder is also the Executive Producer of S-Town, a new podcast from the team behind Serial, which will be released in its entirety on 28 March.
  • Christopher Borrelli, arts critic and features reporter for Chicago Tribune who specialises in serious explorations of pop culture and once wrote over a thousand words on the mathematical formula behind suspense in horror films. You can also catch up on Borrelli’s talk at BINGEFEST: When TV Got High, offering a great 101 into why TV matters.
  • Australian presenter, comedian and author Gretel Killeen, best known as the host of Big Brother Australia and regular contributor to numerous TV and talk shows. In 2015, Killeen co-wrote and starred in Sydney Opera House’s viral web-series Minister for Men.
