Sydney travellers, as well as international travellers flying into Sydney, will now be able to enjoy seamless travel to Queensland’s Sunshine Coast following the start today of Qantas’ second direct service between Sydney and the Sunshine Coast.
The new service is ideal for holidaymakers, departing Sydney at 10.30am, arriving Sunshine Coast at 12.05pm, well-timed for checking into hotels or having lunch by the water. The return flight is also conveniently timed, allowing travellers almost a full morning on the Sunshine Coast before leaving Sunshine Coast Airport at 12.45pm, arriving in Sydney at 2.30pm.
The additional service has been launched in the wake of Sunshine Coast Airport being named the fastest growing airport in Australia, with 43 months of consecutive passenger growth, and year on year average growth of 9%.
“This is a very significant addition to the Sunshine Coast’s flight schedule,” said Sunshine Coast Airport CEO, Andrew Brodie.
“Connectivity is key for regional airports and the new service will be be particularly attractive for leisure travellers flying from Sydney or coming in from overseas destinations and then travelling to the Sunshine Coast as they will be able to travel on one ticket, with their luggage checked right through to the end destination.
“We expect the extra flight to be very popular, especially as winter begins to take grip in the southern states. The Sunshine Coast’s so-called winter usually means sunshine and temperatures around 25C, which makes our conditions almost perfect for a short or extended escape.”
QantasLink CEO John Gissing said the additional flights have been introduced to offer more choice for the growing number of visitors to the Sunshine Coast.
“By adding a morning flight to our schedule, we’re helping travellers from Sydney arrive in the Sunshine Coast sooner, whether it’s for business or to unwind on holiday,” Mr Gissing said.
“These services also open up more options for overseas visitors who will be able to easily connect to the Sunshine Coast after arriving on international flights in Sydney.
“These extra flights are in response to feedback from customers, industry and community leaders on the Sunshine Coast. We look forward to playing our part in continuing to drive business and tourism opportunities in the region.”
By increasing its weekday flights between Sydney and the Sunshine Coast from daily to double daily, Qantas’ total weekly return flights will increase from eight to 13, adding more than 550 seats on the route in each direction each week. Flights will be operated by 110-seat Boeing 717 aircraft which include a Business cabin.
