Secrets of boating holidays from world’s largest operator

egtmedia59The Royal Sydney Yacht Club in Sydney’s maritime suburb of Kirribilli provided an appropriate venue and backdrop yesterday for an exposition of some very appealing holiday options on smaller boats.

David Reid, TUI Marine’s head of distribution for Australia and Asia/Pacific, provided an overview of the company’s brands. TUI Marine is the worlds leading marine leisure business, operating Sunsail, The Moorings and Le Boat. It operates around the world and has just expanded into Poland.

Altogether, TUI Marine has 100 bases worldwide, 2500 boats and 41 websites in nine languages. unnamed

The company in fact offers five brands, the other two being Footloose and Leopard Catamarans. Reid concentrated yesterday on the first three.

The Moorings offers a variety of charter options, including power yachts and skippered and crewed charters, with services of a skilled captain and gourmet chef in beautiful locations around the globe. With over 650 yachts in 20 destinations worldwide, from the Bahamas to Asia, The Moorings offers hands-on sailing experiences, power yacht trips or all-inclusive crewed yachts.

“Sit back and sip your G&T, enjoy a private yacht cruise around the Med,” Reid said. If you feel like taking the wheel, “have a go if you want to”.

Sunsail vacations are for “sailors of all levels” and are available in all locations – everywhere from Dubrovnik to Tonga.

“Take the helm yourself or hire a skipper to do the hard work for you,” is the catchphrase. The brand combines independent cruising and evening social events to create a fun one- or two-week experience. Cruisers can team up with up to 14 other boats on 19 different routes, including a lead boat with Sunsail crew. Sunsail is  currently offering 15% discounts on departures up to 30 September 2014 in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and selected locations, and 10% savings in departures from 1 October to 15 December 2014.

Le Boat claims the title of Europe’s number-one boating holiday specialist, with a wide selection of self-drive cruising itineraries on European rivers, canals and lakes.

Le Boat growth is massive, Reid said. Clients don’t need a boating licence or any experience. The boats travel at only seven knots or so and have good rubber bumpers, so its all pretty easy and great fun. France is the main destination. With the long March to October cruising season giving plenty of sunny days, clients can relax and take in the history, culture and heritage of the region they choose.

One final tip from Reid: avoid July and August; it’s the school holiday and main vacation season in France and tends to be pretty crowded.
