Walk Japan, the pioneering operator of seasonal walking tours across Japan, is delighted to announce its Autumn and Winter Tours for 2017/18, offering travellers unique ways to discover the stunning landscapes and ancient mysteries of Japan.

Expertly led small group tours – each accommodating a maximum of just 12 people – traverse the beautiful islands of the archipelago, and see truly cultural and authentic sides of Japan not often experienced by tourists.

Travellers who wish to gain an understanding of Japanese society, customs, history and food walk at a comfortable pace and stay each night in charming Japanese traditional inns, or ryokans, dotted across the countryside.

Just a few of the tours on offer with Walk Japan this northern hemisphere autumn and winter include:

Basho Tour: Narrow Road to the North
A 9-day tour starting in Tokyo and finishing in Kanazawa, this cultural tour follows in the footsteps of 17th-century poet Matsuo Basho’s travelogue Narrow Road to the North – considered a major text of classical Japanese literature. A walk through the beautiful northern part of Honshu island to the rugged Sea of Japan coast, travellers explore the scenery of the remote Tohoku region before reaching the cultured, old city of Kanazawa. The walking is along quiet country lanes, forest trails and mountain footpaths, delighting in some of the greatest scenery to be found in Japan.

Price: JPY454,000 (AUD$5350) per person.

Autumn tour dates: September 10-18; 26-October 4; October 15-23; October 29-November 6.

Izu Geo Trail
A 7-day tour starting in Tokyo and finishing in Shuzenji in Izu, this walk is a journey through a spectacular geological park. It’s an exploration of the fascinating Izu Peninsula with excellent trekking along coastal trails. Travellers discover incredible geological formations, beaches, waterfalls, and places that have, over the course of time, informed Japanese literature and history. Beautifully located inns, the region’s renowned seafood cuisine and onsen hot spring baths await.

Price: JPY368,000 (AUD$4340) per person.

Autumn tour dates: November 14-20; 18-24; 28-December 4.

Winter Nakasendo Way
A 7 day tour starting in Nagoya and finishing in Matsumoto, this is the Winter version of Walk Japan’s original walk, the signature Nakasendo Way. En route, travellers explore high snowy passes and plateaus with stunning views, farming communities, stepped fields and bamboo groves, picturesque towns, and ancient forests. At the end of the walking day, travellers enjoy excellent meals of locally sourced produce and a soak in the onsen thermal hot spring baths.

Price: JPY282,000 (AUD$3320) per person

Winter tour dates: December 7-13; 20-26. 2018: January 4-10; 10-16; 28-February 3; February 7-13; 21-27.

Hokkaido Snow Tour
An 8-day tour starting in Kushiro and finishing in Utoro, this adventurous journey takes in the little-visited, snowy northern territory of the country in snowshoes. This walk showcases eastern Hokkaido’s pristine snow-covered winter wonderland landscape, wildlife up close in natural habitats, spectacular crater lakes and active volcanoes, as well as top-class local cuisine and soothing onsen thermal hot spring baths.

Price: JPY498,000 (AUD$5875) per person.

Winter tour dates: 2018: February 12-19.

Led by enthusiastic and well-informed guides, the walking tours vary not only in location and theme, but also in levels of activity; beginning with the easiest at Level 1 (walkers must be able to handle their own luggage, climb a few flights of stairs and walk less than 5km a day) to the most challenging Level 6 (in which there could be up to eight hours of activity per day over varied, mountainous terrain).
