Seoul MICE Session Charts the Way Ahead for Seoul’s Meetings Industry

Seoul’s top general hotel managers recently joined the city’s key tourism policymakers in a high-level gathering designed to explore ways of maintaining the record-breaking levels of growth currently being enjoyed by Seoul’s business events sector.

Bringing together Seoul City officials and sixteen convention hotel CEOs, the “Seoul MICE Session” was held on July 16th at Floating Island, where attendees discussed Seoul’s future potential and current growth trends from the perspective of the city’s luxury accommodation market.

Also contributing to the talks were several government tourism and business events experts from the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Tourism Organization, who outlined the government’s current initiatives for the meetings industry, most notably its three-phase “Master Plan”, designed to markedly expand the city’s business events infrastructure and services.

Among the participants were three recently-appointed hotel general managers. These included Matthew Cooper of the JW Marriott Hotel Seoul, seoul-mice-floating-island-foodRadu Cernia of The Ritz-Carlton Seoul, and Matthias Sutter, of the Sheraton Seoul D Cube City Hotel.

Noted government speakers included Kang Taewoong, Director General for Tourism Policy, and Maureen O’Crowley, Associate Director of the Seoul Convention Bureau, who also discussed the types of support available to overseas associations and companies who choose Seoul for their international events.

Explaining how Seoul is showcased to buyers at overseas industry events, Ms O’Crowley explained, “Our presentations always include all our stars: our award-winning airport, our premier hotels – especially those SMA members, cuisine, shopping, leisure attractions and our MICE facilities that shine for many a successful business event.”

The participating parties form part of the Seoul MICE Alliance, a government/industry partnership of the city’s main business events stakeholders. Event planners who utilize SMA member companies receive additional benefits if they obtain public assistance in attracting, holding and promoting events.A full SMA directory is available here.

In addition to the forum, participants were given a guided tour of Floating Island by its CEO, Gang Yeongbae followed by a networking lunch at the meeting venue.

Located on the Hangang (River) near the Gangnam district, Floating Island is Seoul’s latest meeting venue. Opened in April, it is a series of connected artificial islets providing a total floor space of 9,995m². This includes the 762m²-convention hall where the conference took place, restaurants, a roof garden, yacht club, and an on-shore media gallery/stage.
