A registered sex offender has been arrested for allegedly fondling a woman’s breasts and repeatedly placing his hand on her thigh as she attempted to sleep during a long-haul flight.
Prosecutors contend that Yoel Oberlander, 35, from New York, was sitting next to a woman on an El Al flight from Tel Aviv, Israel, to Newark, New Jersey, when he touched the woman’s breasts as she was trying to sleep and then kept grabbing her.
The victim, whose age was not specified, switched seats when her mother, seated next to her on the other side, awoke. They then called for help.
NBC New York said it was Oberlander’s third arrest. He was convicted of abusing an 11-year-old girl in 2002 and was arrested for trespassing at a children’s sleepaway camp in 2012, when he sneaked into a all-boys dormitory and allegedly tickled children’s feet in the middle of the night.
After the latest incident, Oberlander was charged by federal prosecutors in a New Jersey court with abusive sexual contact on an aircraft. He faces up to two years in prison and a USD 250,000 fine if convicted.
