Seychelles at Bright Beginnings Nursery Mushrif Abu Dhabi International Cultural Day

For the second year in a row, STB Abu Dhabi was invited to participate in the Bright Beginnings Nursery Mushrif Abu Dhabi International Cultural Day.  Remembering last year’s event, which had been a resounding success with all parties involved, it was with a lot of eagerness therefore that Ms Aliette Esther, Tourism Attaché based at the Seychelles Embassy in Abu Dhabi accepted the invitation, once more.  Mrs Erica Rangasamy, a Seychellois school teacher at the nursery, and Ms Esther, had a couple of brainstorming sessions to decide on how to make this year’s presentation bigger and better.  With 275 students in attendance, they would be targeting at least 550 parents and other invitees, 65 teachers and 4 directors, so it had to be impressive in all aspects. Other countries represented on that day were Syria, UAE, India, Egypt, Palestine, Pakistan, England, The Philippines, Canada, Sri Lanka just to name a few.

“Without being biased, our presentation was one of the best,” commented Ms Esther. Whilst we did not have the dynamic dancing groups like Pakistan, we outshone everyone by creating an authentic island ambience. A banner of 700cms x 235cms representing our lush vegetation, white sandy beach, turquoise blue sea as well as a young boy with a giant tortoise was erected a week before the event.  So for seven days before the actual event, we had already started advertising it with the parents who came to drop off or pick up their kids. As you can imagine, the life-size banner was certainly a big hit with the kids on the day! They were fascinated by the tortoise and all the kids went up to the banner to touch it”.

Sand was laid out in front of the backdrop, and beach chairs and colourful beach towels and pareos completed the picture. The kids had made and coloured all sorts of sea animals which were hung around the dedicated area. These also fascinated the 1-5 year-olds.  The huge land tortoise, made of papier-mâché by Ms.Lyla Salaheddine, a teacher at the nursery, was another attraction as kids were climbing all over it.  Papay tournen (a local papaya jam), breadfruit, golden apples, sugarcane sticks and coconut nougat were flown in for the occasion and had everyone’s salivary glands working full-time, just like the tuna patties that Ms Esther had personally prepared.  The visitors were delighted by Erica’s pineapple and mango salads as well.  With some Seychellois music playing in the background, it was not so hard to be transported to the magical islands. 344 goodie bags were also given away on the day.

The highlight of the day however was the raffle draw which had been promoted on the nursery website and social media.  “The first prize was certainly an attraction as it was two return tickets Abu Dhabi to the Seychelles, and the lucky winner was an Emirati pupil whose mother was over the moon when she won it, “said Ms Esther.

“The tickets were donated by Air Seychelles, which is our national carrier and flies to the islands daily from Abu Dhabi”. Thank you so very much for all that you do for Bright Beginnings during our International Week. The Embassy and Seychelles Tourism Board and of course you, are always so very very generous with your time, gifts and knowledge sharing with our families and staff. The gift of 2 Air Seychelles/Etihad Partner flights to the beautiful Seychelles this year was overwhelming! This helped us raise nearly Dhs 6000 for the Make A Wish Foundation. And as always, we all love your wonderful Seychelles goodie bags! Many of our parents and staff expressed their thanks for these! Your display is always a big hit during our International Week and the new backdrop this year transported us all away to the beautiful Seychelles. Thank you so very much and we thoroughly enjoy working with you Aliette, the Seychelles Embassy and the Seychelles Tourism Board.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Once more, the event was a great success. “Erica and I had dozens of parents coming up to us with questions about the islands, how to get there, what activities they could do etc..,”Ms Esther added.  “The nursery has a mix of nationalities, with many UAE nationals as well, and they are all bi-lingual, which is just wonderful. If we get 10% of the parents to fly to the Seychelles, I will be happy. The fact that they don’t require a visa to enter the Seychelles is a definite attraction, as is the short four-hour trip and frequency of the flights.”

“I would like to thank the management of the nursery, especially Jo Shaban, the Managing Director and Joud Zuriekat, the Director of the nursery. They are huge fans of the Seychelles and I am grateful to them for giving us this opportunity to showcase our islands at their nursery once more. We all had lots of fun and there is no doubt that everyone who visited our stand have gone away with the word Seychelles imprinted on their minds.”

Jo Shaban couldn’t agree more!  “Aliette is always extremely generous with her time, gifts and knowledge, which she’s always so willing to share with the students’ families and staff.  The gift of 2 Air Seychelles-Etihad flights to the beautiful islands this year was overwhelming. This helped us raise nearly Dhs6,000 for the Make A Wish Foundation.  We love the STB goodie bags!  The display was a big hit as always and the new backdrop transported us to the beautiful Seychelles.  We thank her from the very bottom of our hearts”.
