Shangri-La Hotel, Fuzhou Participates in Earth Hour for Sixth Consecutive Year

Shangri-La Hotel, Fuzhou participated in World Wildlife Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Earth Hour campaign for the sixth year on 29 March 2014. 

For six years, the hotel, along with other worldwide volunteers, has used attic faith and consistent action to actively prevent the degradation of the environment.

During the event, the hotel turned off most of the lighting in the operation areas and dimmed the lights in the public areas, restaurants and outside the hotel building.  Meanwhile, guests were invited to participate by minimising electric usage to as low as possible and using the Bedsheet Re-use Card to reduce laundry.  Signs encouraging the hotel staff to join the activity through their actions, such as using the stairs instead of the elevators, were also put in place.

Notably, a huge ‘S’ logo measuring 43 metres high and 36 metres wide could be seen after all the lights have been turned off.  Apparently, it has been planned even before Earth Hour started.  Residents from 414 guestrooms received a signal to control the lights.  Therefore, this event was successfully held with meaning and the great teamwork between hotel staff and the supportive resident guests.

“As an ISO14001 certified hotel, Shangri-La Hotel always operates with the most sustainable, efficient and effective concept.  Today, by using the hotel building, which is one of the icons at the heart of Fuzhou city, hotel staff and guests co-operated to complete this challenging displaying for declaring Shangri-La Hotel, Fuzhou’s sustainable promise, as well as contributing to building a ‘Refreshing Fujian’,” said Roc Huang, general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Fuzhou.

Shangri-La Hotel, Fuzhou reportedly installed the solar equipment at the end of 2010 to partly replace the old oil-burning boiler.  As a result, the hotel’s average monthly fuel consumption has reduced by 8.83 tons.  Furthermore, the bathroom supplies in the hotel guestrooms have been replaced with PSM biodegradable material, which can biodegrade in 80 days, since December 2012.  Moreover, Shangri-La Hotel, Fuzhou is the first hotel in Fujian with low-carbon emission.  The hotel has invested over RMB350,000 in establishing a more sustainable paperless registering system.
