Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur Receives The Asean Green Hotel Award For The Fourth Time Running

Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur has once again retained the position as one of the best eco-friendly hotels in Asia by winning the ASEAN Green Hotel Award 2014-2016 for the fourth-time running, having previously been awarded the awards in 2008-2010, 2010-2012, and 2012-2014.  
The award, which serves as a recognition of the hotel’s continued commitment and effort in working towards a sustainable future and responsible tourism that benefits its guests, employees and the community at large, was presented by Tourism and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz at the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2014 held in Kuching on 19 January 2014.

A hotel committed to sustaining the environment, Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur was the first hotel in Southeast Asia to be awarded with three major certifications; ISO14001: Environmental Management System, OHSAS18000: Occupational Health and Safety Management System and Hazard Critical Control Point (HACCP) by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance, United Kingdom in 2006.  Asean-Green-Hotel-Award-2012-2014

Among the hotel’s efforts to better the environment is the in-house recycling of the hotel’s wet waste into organic fertilizer used to sustain the hotel’s landscape and gardens. This form of recycling assists in reducing the need for sanitary landfill and subsequently reduces the production of methane and ground water pollution.

A committee of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Ambassadors are also trained and appointed within the hotel to conduct activities and oversee, regulate and disseminate information related to environment conservation and sustainability. CSR sessions involving the ambassadors and members of staff are held monthly in order to spread awareness and encourage CSR participation across the hotel ranks.

Held every two years, the ASEAN Green Hotel Award is a form of appreciation and recognition towards tourism stakeholders for adopting the ASEAN Green Hotel Standards into their services. Environmental issues are the main aspects for the assessment, as stipulated in the ASEAN Green Hotel Standard document. Criteria and essential requirements include environmental policy and hotel operation activities, utilization of green products, cooperation with local community and organizations, human resources development, solid waste management, energy efficiency, water efficiency, water quality management (indoor and outdoor), noise pollution control, waste water treatment and management, and toxic and chemical substance disposal management.

Nine other hotels in Malaysia were also honoured with the award, which include Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur’s sister properties Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa, Kota Kinabalu, Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort, Kota Kinabalu and Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang.
