Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya Marks World Wetlands Day With Mangrove Planting

Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya’s team, led by Sigi Bierbaumer, the hotel’s general manager, went to the mangrove plantation area in Wonorejo to plant mangrove seedlings, clean up the area and release birds to its natural habitat to mark World Wetlands Day.  World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February.

The hotel team, together with fifth graders from MI Nurul Huda 1 School – the hotel’s CSR partner – planted more than 500 mangrove seedlings.  They then cleaned up the area and checked on the mangroves that were planted in the previous years.

As an important category of wetlands, mangrove forests grow along tropical coastlines and in saltwater environments.  They are a critical component of marine ecosystems, serving as nursery grounds for many aquatic species, including fish species.  Mangroves also serve as excellent buffer zones between the open ocean and coastal lands, reducing the impacts of storms and keeping coastal erosion under control.

Mr Bierbaumer expressed his gratefulness that, together with the hotel, he could give back to nature and, in the long run, to the local community through this annual mangrove planting activity.
