Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney is celebrating three major award wins at the prestigious 2017 Tourism Accommodation Australia (TAA) NSW  Awards for Excellence, which took place on 20 July.

Executive Pastry Chef Anna Polyviou took home the coveted “Hotel Chef of the Year”, Altitude restaurant was named “Restaurant of the Year” and Director of Engineering Anura Yapa won “Engineer of the Year” for the third year in a row.

General Manager Craig Hooley said he was “delighted to see the extraordinary talent and achievements of colleagues recognised and rewarded by peers at the accommodation industry’s leading awards night”.

Executive Pastry Chef Anna Polyviou

Anna Polyviou turned her creative eye to the hotel’s sweetest experiences, becoming known for her High Tea, dessert station at Café Mix, treats at Lobby Lounge and the Horizon Club, along with in-room dining menus.

Polyviou is the mastermind behind Sydney’s biggest dessert event of the year, Sweet Street, as well as the hotel’s annual Christmas Spectacular, a key destination on Sydney’s festive calendar.

In July 2017, Polyviou was announced as a judge on Nine Network Australia’s brand new prime-time cooking competition, Family Food Fight.

Altitude Restaurant

Altitude is taking the dining experience to new heights. Nowhere else in Sydney will you find such an award-winning fine dining establishment hovering at the very top of a hotel, high above Sydney’s shimmering harbour and glittering jewels.

In 2016, Altitude received three hats at the prestigious Gault&Millau Awards, won “Best Listing of Australian Wine” at the celebrated Wine List of the Year Awards, and has a 3 Goblet wine list rating from Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine.

Director of Engineering Anura Yapa

With 34 years within the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering sector, including 21 years Hotel Engineering, Yapa is also the President of the NSW chapter of the Australian Institute for Hotel Engineering.

Yapa has been recognised for his efforts during a major power-outage, the successful completion of the Green-Building-Fund Project, and the luxury refurbishment of the hotel’s club lounge and rooms, amongst other achievements.
