Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has appointed Mr Jean-Philippe Jacopin as general manager for its flagship hotel in China – Shangri-La Hotel, Xian, a property of 395 guestrooms and suites, and a 2,750-square-metre event space.

Xian is not Mr Jacopin’s first time in China. Indeed, he already spent over four years in Chongqing, where he managed a five-star property for a well-known international group.

Hailing from France and the son of hoteliers, Mr Jacopin brings with him over 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry, one-third of which was gained in Asia including Japan, Korea and, since 2010, China. After graduating from a hotel management school in his native country, he moved to Switzerland to further his studies and experience. In 1990, joined the Hilton group as a food and beverage trainee in Geneva. He worked his way up through various postings, including sales and marketing and operations management positions. He then moved to Britain, where he lived for 10 years before arriving in Asia with his wife.

Passionate about food, Mr Jacopin began his career in the kitchen, but very soon realised that his real passion lay in direct contact with people.

With a strong food and beverage background, he has won various awards for the different properties, including a hotel in South Korea that won the prestigious Travel Award for “Best Golf & Spa Resort in South Korea” for three consecutive years.

Mr Jacopin has a deep passion for the hotel industry with a special love for gastronomy – passion he likes to share and which has made him start in the Southwest China a chapter of the famous gastronomic association La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, now with two groups – one in Chongqing and one in Chengdu.

“With Shangri-La, I am looking forward to continuing and deepening the proud tradition of delighting our guests every and each time they will step through our door, with the creation of engaging experiences coming straight from our hearts,” Mr Jacopin said. “I’d like to be seen in the hotel as much as possible and have a direct contact with our guests, but I cannot do it all alone; customer satisfaction can only be achieved as a team work that embraces all my colleagues, as each one of them is an important link in the chain.”

Outside work, Mr Jacopin enjoys playing golf, travelling, listening music, trying new restaurants and entertaining friends at home with good home cooked food.
