Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang and its sister property, Golden Sands Resort, Penang by Shangri-La, have been providing more than a million ringgit worth of aid to the poor through its Embrace, Shangri-La’s Care for People project.

For many years, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang’s ‘Embrace Gift of Life’ project and Golden Sands Resort, Penang’s ‘Embrace Gift of Limb’ project have sponsored many less-fortunate children in Penang, Butterworth and as far as Kedah and Perlis. Through these projects, the resorts provide urgent life-saving medical treatments and enhance the quality of life of beneficiaries by sponsoring artificial limbs.

In 2018 alone, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang sponsored a total of RM185,373 for the heart surgeries of five babies born with congenital heart defects. One of the babies who received sponsorship was Nurul Adeeva Afsheen binti Iswari, aged 12 months. Born with a heart defect, she had bluish skin, breathing difficulties, heart murmur, finger clubbing and occasional loss of consciousness. Baby Adeeva had the operation on 25 July 2018. She is now recuperating well.

Under the ‘Embrace Gift of Limb’ project, Golden Sands Resort, Penang sponsored RM121,264 worth of artificial limbs for 24 recipients aged 4 to 19 years in 2018. Prosthetic legs, arms and hands enable recipients to live normal lives without physical limitations. The youngest Gift of Limb beneficiary was Alif Iqbal bin Mohamad Amir, who was diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy, which caused him to tiptoe when he walked. He received a tailor-made ankle foot orthosis to correct his gait.

During the mock cheque presentation, each beneficiary also received a goody bag of groceries. These goody bags were purchased using part of the proceeds from the recent sale of Sandy soft toys, Golden Sands Resort, Penang’s mascot.
