Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa Transformed!

Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu, has unveiled its new look after an extensive 12 months of transformation.

The beachside resort carried out rejuvenation works throughout its 25-acre property in two phases, revealing newly refurbished guestrooms, dramatic ballroom and function rooms, family rooms, restaurant and even a brand new all-glass function venue recently.

All 251 suites and deluxe rooms in the Resort’s original wing, the Tanjung Wing, are now more luxurious and comfortable than ever before, as designers injected the rooms and suites with bright colours to reflect the brilliance of the South China Sea and the soft sands of the nearby islands.

Internationally-renowned interior designers from ACID (Avalon Collective Interior Design), Singapore, was commissioned to oversee the overall design concept. He found inspiration from the blue seas and green palms at the nearby Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park islands. Curated artworks and custom-designed furniture bring balmy island ambiance into each Tanjung Wing room and suite.

To mark the new era of luxurious travel, Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa became the first hotel in Malaysia to present its suite-staying guests with portable high-speed WiFi connectivity throughout their stay.

Guest rooms:

Light and airy, each room features bright blue-green-brown tones on its walls. Tropical flora and Borneo wood features adorn each 47 square-metre deluxe room, while floor-to-ceiling glass doors accord guests with amazing views of the islands on the South China Sea before them.

Beds with leather-tufted headboards, large wooden writing desks, and rugs inspired by the hotel’s beachside location are included in the new furnishings. Generous wardrobe space and the convenience of smart televisions in these rooms are God-sent features for travel-savvy wanderers.

As an added bonus, some of these newly refurbished deluxe rooms also feature built-in Murphy beds, a much-approved feature for a party of three.

Each marbled-top bathroom in this wing boasts of both a walk-in shower and a deliciously large bathtub, perfect to drain away a hard day out in the sun or at meetings.

Guest suites:

The Deluxe, Executive and Presidential Suites in the Tanjung Wing are designed to pamper the discerning traveler with opulent facilities and state-of-the-art amenities.

The suites carry the same theme as the deluxe rooms: bright and earthy features adorn the walls and the interiors, promising respite to the weary traveler.

All suites are located in quiet corners of the star-shaped Tanjung Wing, measuring between 108 to 239 square metre each. Featuring separate living area furnished with comfortable oversized furniture  on the large outdoor patio and spacious bedroom, each suite pampers guests with a separate generous walk-in closet, elegant hallway entrance, luxurious L’Occitane toiletries made with the finest ingredients, Nespresso coffee machines and a smart television that connects to your devices.

In addition to these staple comforts, Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa is providing its guests with mobile WiFi connectivity throughout their stay. Each suite comes with a portable mobile WiFi device that accords the fast unlimited internet access in and outside the resort. The guests are free to take the devices out during their tour of the city, having the reassurance of connectivity while visiting the local attractions throughout Sabah.

Facilities in Tanjung Wing:

Designers were careful to retain the nostalgia of the rich tropical jungle located in the heart of the Tanjung Wing throughout the renovation process.

Other facilities like the Cool Zone Kids’ Club, the Hotel Shop and travel agencies continue to serve guests on the ground floor of the Tanjung Wing.

Originally built in1983, Tanjung Wing rooms welcomed Malaysian sultans and heads of state as its first guests for the nation’s Rulers’ Conference then.

The four-storied building resembling a starfish encloses a lush tropical garden and overlooks the resort’s grounds, Tanjung Aru Beach and the nearby islands.

Family Rooms:

In line with the launch of the many refreshed facilities, Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa is proud to introduce 12 Family Rooms located in the Kinabalu Wing.

Measuring an expansive 66 square-metre, each Family Room can accommodate two adults and two children in two separate spaces. The areas are connected by a doorway, allowing parents to watch over their children while enjoying the privacy of their own space.

The children’s area is delightfully decorated with kid-friendly amenities and facilities like a bunk bed, its own television and children’s books.

New Café TATU:

The Resort created waves when it introduced a newly-renovated Café TATU in February 2017.

Located on the garden level of Tanjung Wing, Café TATU offers the buzz and variety of live-action stations cooking up sensational authentic global cuisines in a vibrant and colourful atmosphere.

The restaurant also features luxurious buffet breakfast and dinner with the live-cooking stations. Guests can watch as their dishes are prepared fresh, hot and steaming on the spot. There is also an array of Asian and Western main courses.

Lunch is available à la carte and feature Asian favourites, as well as Western favourites, including the signature dish, like its Homemade Satay.

Guests can dine in the comfort of a modern interior, which incorporates tropical seaside design and stylish décor within a theatrical layout.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows adorn the café, allowing guests to take in spectacular views of the resort gardens and swimming pools as they enjoy their meals.

Part of the cafe opens into the gardens, with an exclusive dining area which gives guests the chance to relax and dine outdoors. The outdoor patio, with its signature sunroofs, is in a class of its own.

Café TATU has been extended from its original size to accommodate up to 468 guests at any one time. It opens seven days a week from 6:00 am to 10:30 pm for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Pavilion:

The Resort introduced a brand-new 361-square-metre meeting facility, The Pavilion, popularly known as “Kota Kinabalu’s coolest outdoor meeting venue” at the end of 2016.

Surrounded by well-manicured tropical gardens, The Pavilion faces the South China Sea and the resort’s famed infinity pool.

Completely surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass walls, the air-conditioned octagon-shaped venue boasts a maximum seating capacity of 180 people, but is also perfect for an intimate party for two.

The Pavilion is another addition to the resort’s many meeting facilities.

The Grand Ballroom:

Quiet luxury is the signature of the newly renovated Grand Ballroom where perfectly planned functions are carefully executed.  Crystal chandeliers lend their touch of distinction to any type of meeting and conference.  The pillar-less Grand Ballroom can accommodate up to 1,200 guests for receptions, 1,000-theatre style, 600 banquets and 450 for classroom style functions.

It incorporates an additional function room adjourning to the ballroom and a prayer room for ladies and men.

Immersed in deep blue hues to reflect the refreshing colours of the South China Sea, the ballroom sparkles with breathtaking dazzle.

Smaller functions are also catered for in the Ballroom, which can be divided into three separate areas.  Additionally, the Ballroom Foyer can be used for functions of up to 200 people.  Business functions have all the latest electronic and audio-visual facilities such as wireless and wired Internet access, and our professional, attentive staff make sure no detail is overlooked.

Meeting and Function Rooms:

Along with the Grand Ballroom, there are a number of excellent options to consider for meetings and events here in Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa.

Both the Tanjung and Kinabalu Rooms were closed for several months for the extensive refurbishments. They are now ready for you to consider holding your meetings or events.

Measuring 268 square-metres each, these function rooms are most prized for their magnificent view of the bright blue South China Sea and the Kota Kinabalu city.

Each of these rooms can be divided into three separate rooms, and can accommodate   up   to 200 people each.

The Kinabalu Wing:

Kinabalu Wing rooms offer the ultimate in modern luxury for the guests and are designed to take advantage of the spectacular sea view. The layout in the room departs from the norm by locating the bed near the window creating a pavilion concept giving guests magnificent views from their bed. One step is all it takes to get out into the breezy terrace.

The colours and textures from the sea and beach are captured in the room through the blue green theme of the fabrics, contrasted by the rich wood of cherry, teak, ebony and coconut. Rich contemporary botanical patterns are provided by the Jim Thompson cushions blending with the contemporary rattan weave furniture while the artwork also blends the contemporary and the traditional, the local and the international by using mother of pearl, local tobacco leaves, and the inspiration from the local flora and fauna. The overall effect is that of a luxurious sea view room with the comfort and relaxed character that Sabahan culture represents.

The bathrooms are state of the art offering unparalleled comfort and elegance with separate shower cubicles and bathtubs and large glass window drawing in light into the bathroom and creating a tub with a sea view.

The Kinabalu Wing, a seven-storied building with 223 guestrooms and 19 suites boasts splendid views from their private balconies.

Those facing the West overlook the islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and offer guests’ spectacular sunsets.  Other rooms face the harbour and Kota Kinabalu with majestic view of Mount Kinabalu.
