Sharing for growing together. Italian Destinations’ Retreat: the new project of Convention Bureau Italia.

Convention Bureau Italia launched the Italian Destinations’ Retreat, the new project dedicated to one of the main players of the meeting industry: the destinations. The initiative is addressed to Convention Bureaux and networks of local operators with the aim of identifying the most effective best practices. This objective  was pursued through a questionnaire and a meeting, which  took place on September 1st and which was just the first of a long series of future appointments. Convention Bureau Italia involved all the 40 Italian Convention Bureaux and networks scattered through the country and the first appointment was attended by representatives of half of them.img_9965

The many challenges that destinations deal with are common to them all. Convention Bureau Italia wanted to create an opportunity to discuss those issues, in an atmosphere of maximum sharing among the participants. The aim was that of highlighting the strengths of the Italian destinations and their ability to develop successful strategies to overcome the obstacles they have to overcome.

Among the objectives of the meeting, not only the sharing of best practices, but also the individuation of an Italian modus operandi (way to act) of the destinations’ promotional strategies. This last objective fully reflects the mission of the Convention Bureau Italia. Moreover, the retreat wishes to highlight and define strategies on the relations between the destinations, government and other stakeholders.

During the first appointment, the data collected from the questionnaire sent in June were presented and a picture emerged of the actual situation of the Italian destinations in terms of governance, membership and marketing strategies.

The first part of the meeting was dedicated to the analysis of two fundamental aspects in a convention bureau’s structure: the governance and the relation with members. Significant best practices were shared, both on the strategies of budget management and of relationship with the institutions.

The event then continued with a discussion on the topic of marketing activities and buyers’ targets. Convention Bureau Italia analyzed the promotional activities developed by the participants with the aim of improving the services it offers to respond to the local Convention Bureaux’ needs and expectations.

Many destinations presented their excellence in term of best practices, and this was useful for understanding how to overcome the common and critical challenges.
