Lumo Energy, part of the Infratil Group, one of Australia’s largest business organisations with interests in energy, real estate and transportation, recently engaged SilkRoad to recalibrate its HR operations to ensure greater efficiency and ultimately a better return for shareholders.

With a track record in the energy industry, having worked with the Infratil Group’s Trustpower and Z Energy, SilkRoad integrated its LifeSuite solutions – highlighted by modules OpenHire, RedCarpet, GreenLight and WingSpan – to improve effectiveness and accountability.

“SilkRoad is different. They are a great fit for us as an SME [small and medium-sized enterprise],” said Rachel Berhang, Lumo Energy’s Organisational Development Specialist. “The support is strong and we have a good relationship. They held our hand and were very flexible. We know the name of the company but we also know the names of the people [who work for it] as well.”

SilkRoad Asia Pacific Director James Hewitt said: “The organisation turned to us for our LifeSuite solution to help automate their processes and enable future growth by identifying and developing the next generation of leaders. Thanks to all four solutions, the company has increased efficiencies and saved countless man-hours.”

Lumo Energy’s HR issues had sprung from a high staff turnover and robust training requirements. Its 500 staff were supported by one HR leader, who was clearly swamped. More than half the employees were based in a Melbourne call centre, which created a pressing need for effective recruitment and retention measures to counter the high staff turnover and hiring demands. Lumo Energy’s HR team struggled to handle the paperwork and that prevented them from offering a high level of support to the business.

In order to find a solution, the company conducted a strategic HR review. It revealed the need for a software program that would help the HR team better manage recruitment, onboarding, people management and learning and development (L&D) processes – which were previously handled either by HR or management on a case-by-case basis.

Lumo implemented OpenHire to replace manager-reliant onboarding procedures and paper-recruitment data with a strategic process that enabled the HR team to identify a talent pool that had been pre-screened for future positions.

Employee focused RedCarpet enabled recruits to access content relevant to their role and company procedures and training of new team members was delivered through GreenLight – a tool ensuring employees received the training when they needed it – improving motivation and self-improvement.

Employee retention also increased courtesy of Wingspan for retention and improving its performance-management process. Through the system, it was able to set goals, evaluate employee skills, provide feedback and keep staff informed of development opportunities.
