Singapore Airlines Adds Craft Beer Offering To Sydney And Melbourne

From Sunday 1 October Canberra-based brewery, BentSpoke, will provide First and Business Class customers travelling to and from Singapore the chance to enjoy their Barley Griffin Canberra Pale Ale.

The addition of craft beer on Sydney and Melbourne flights follows the recent announcements in Perth and Brisbane that local craft beer will also be served on flights from the Queensland and West Australian capitals from Sunday 1 October.

The Barely Griffin Canberra Pale Ale is described as a light and crisp session ale that delivers a mix of tropical, grassy and herbaceous hop aromas.

Singapore Airlines Regional Vice President, Mr Tan Tiow Kor, said the introduction of craft beer onboard reinforced Singapore Airlines commitment to supporting local Australian producers and businesses, as well as Singapore Airlines focus on delivering a premium food and beverage offering.

“Since we began operating to Australia 50 years ago we have consistently looked to source local Australian produce when we have had the opportunity,” Mr Tan said.

“Partnering with a third Australian craft brewery reinforces this commitment and highlights our strong focus on providing our customers with a selection of premium food and beverage options onboard our flights.

“From the curation of our wine lists by a panel of world renowned wine experts, to our menus designed by our International Culinary Panel of the world’s best chefs, we are consistently looking to develop our onboard offering to enhance our customer’s experience.

“We are also committed to ensuring what is served onboard reflects current trends, and over the past few years the popularity and awareness of craft beer has certainly grown.

“As a result of this significant growth, not just in Australia but across North and South East Asia, we have decided to partner with BentSpoke to offer a craft beer option onboard for our Sydney and Melbourne customers.”

Established in 2014 in the centre of Canberra, BentSpoke have quickly grown from being a standalone brewpub in Braddon to adding a new production scale brewery and cannery in the outer suburbs of Canberra to meet growing demand for their beers and ciders.

BentSpoke co-owner and head brewer, Richard Watkins, said it was a huge honour for BentSpoke to be chosen from all the great breweries in South-Eastern Australia.

“We’re really looking forward to international visitors having our beer as their first taste of Australia, Mr Watkins said.

Mr Tan added that while BentSpoke were based in Canberra, it would not be included on Singapore Airlines flights from Australia’s capital city at this stage.

“As we already offer our customers a local Wellington craft beer, brewed by Garage Project, on our Canberra service, our immediate focus has been on providing a craft beer option for our Sydney and Melbourne customers,” Mr Tan said.

“Now that we have secured BentSpoke to pour their Barley Griffin Canberra Pale Ale onboard those flights we will begin to explore what opportunities there are to provide our Canberra customers with two choices of craft beer, instead of one.”

Singapore Airlines first introduced craft beer onboard all flights to and from New Zealand earlier this year when it began pouring Wellington-based brewery Garage Project’s craft beer, Hâpi Daze.

Last week Singapore Airlines announced it would extend its onboard craft beer offering to its Perth and Brisbane services, reinforcing its commitment to providing customers with premium food and beverage choices that reflect current trends.

Local Western Australian craft brewery, Cheeky Monkey, will pour their Pale Ale in Business Class on all flights to and from Perth, while Brisbane craft brewery, Green Beacon, will offer Business Class customers travelling to and from Brisbane the chance to enjoy their Wayfarer AmericanWheat Beer.
