I have always really liked Singapore, and while some might say that it is a tad sanitised or lacking personality, I describe it as “Asia that works”, with this stunning, vibrant Asian city, not only a great place to do business but also an amazing leisure destination.I was very fortunate to be able visit the “lion city” again recently with what strikes me about Singapore every time I visit, is that Singapore is a highly efficient and true world city, where everyone speaks English and it’s clean, safe, and secure, where the taxis are clean and well maintained and very cheap, and the underground rail system is spotless or as an Indian friend of mind described a number of years ago “cleaner than a hospital in Mumbai”!
Orchard Road is probably Singapore’s most well-known street, right in the heart of Singapore’s top entertainment and shopping district, so where better for me to stay than on Orchard Road and where better than at the Hilton Singapore.
I also like that in Singapore it is never more than about 20 minutes to anywhere and with a rail station just 5 mins from the Hilton Singapore and nearby I found Singapore’s world famous Botanic Gardens and the National Orchid Garden, with the Chinatown Heritage Centre, the 165-meter Singapore Flyer, the Singapore Zoo and Sentosa Island not far away. For shopaholics, the Hilton Singapore is surrounded by Singapore’s top shopping malls, including the incredible ION and there is even a shopping mall, the Shopping Gallery with two floors of luxury boutiques, right inside the hotel.
Singapore is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and while the Hilton Singapore was an early market leader as it celebrates its 40th anniversary this year this year, the hotel is smart, contemporary and right up to date, having been extensively refurbished and maintained, with new features being installed continuously.
There are 421 modern and very well equipped rooms in the Hilton Singapore which targets both business and leisure travellers and I was very fortunate to be staying on an Executive floor, which included access to the Hilton Singapore’s recently refurbished Executive Lounge, perched right on top of the hotel, providing great city views, a really high quality complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails, high speed internet and very impressive staff.
There are plenty of eating choices at the Hilton Singapore with just off the lobby the hotel’s flagship restaurant the multi-million dollar and brand spanking new Opus Bar and Grill, cleverly creating a different feel and experience at different times of the day from breakfast to lunch to dinner, with a new breakfast experience with smart use of space, in the evening offering Opus’ Australian chef Nick Philip’s Australian prime-cuts, Himalayan salt dry aged in-house for 14 to 36 days and grilled over imported charcoal, with my steak, I have to say, one of the best steaks I have eaten in a very long time indeed, plus great deserts and an extensive quality global wine list.
Iggy’s, described as offering a modern European menu with an Asian twist and ranked 18th out of Asia’s top 50 restaurants is also located within the hotel.
Right at the top of the hotel on the roof not only will you find an excellent pool, great for laps or fun, again with amazing views of Singapore, but also the hotel’s Italian restaurant Il Cielo, renowned and recognised for its food and for using organic produce plus on the same level, the Sky Bar a perfect location for an evening cocktail while enjoying a balmy Singaporean evening.
There is an organic juices and healthy lunch location, the Glow Juice Bar and Café, and for those of us with a sweet tooth, swinging by the lobby to the new D9 Cakery would satisfy anyone’s need for a sugar hit, with an impressive six-meter showcase of delicious cakes, pastries and you can watch a chef in action create edible pieces of art throughout the day… yum … and yes they taste as good as they look!
With some much great food on offer, to work off those calories there is a fully equipped 24hr fitness centre and guests can also indulge in rejuvenating beauty treatments.
For conferences and meetings the Hilton Singapore can accommodate meetings of 18 to 550 guests and there is high speed internet throughout the hotel and a Connectivity Bar in the lobby, so keeping in touch is very simple and straightforward.
