Ski Area in French Alps Recommended for the Best Guaranteed Snow

October 6, 2014 Ski No Comments Email Email

Many factors come into play when choosing a ski resort for a holiday. However, one of the most important is the level of snow that the resort can offer. Espace Killy in the French Alps has been mentioned as one of the best ski areas in the world for its snow recently, in an article in the Telegraph newspaper.

The Telegraph recently published the article highlighting resorts where skiers are most likely to avoid disappointment when it comes to the level of snow received. The resorts of Val d’Isère and Tignes, which make up the Espace Killy ski area, came highly recommended – which is partly because of their height, with the highest lifts going up to nearly 3,500 metres. They also share 300 kilometres of pistes.

Val d’Isère is one of the earliest resorts to open in the French Alps every year – opening in November and it staying open until May. It has very reliable snow records, and anyone visiting during the season can expect to find plenty of snow, earning it the right to be included on the list.

The season in Tignes begins even earlier, in October. However, this is only for skiing on the high altitude Grande Motte glacier. It opens its lower lifts as soon as the snow starts falling, and it is fully operational by the start of December. It then stays open until mid-May.

Another resort mentioned in the article as being particularly good for its snow record was Val Thorens, also in the French Alps. The resort boasts access to 600 kilometres of pistes as part of the Three Valleys ski area, with the highest lift being 3,230 metres. It has very good snow from the end of November through to early May.

Others resorts that were on the list include Jackson Hole in Wyoming, Cervinia in Italy, Whistler in Canada, Sölden in Austria and Saas-Fee in Switzerland.
