Finding the perfect flight is now even easier with the launch of Skyscanner’s refreshed Flights app, which features major overhauls to the user experience, design and functionality as well as the introduction of smarter features such as top offers, flight rating, better filters and push notifications for price alerts.
According to data* provided by the global travel search engine, the majority of Aussies (61%) are using their mobile phones and tablets to search for flights on Skyscanner. The proportion of travellers using smartphones to search for flights versus desktop and tablets has also reached 50%. While the booking process itself remains a lean forward experience with roughly 2 in 3 Aussies booking on desktop. However, an increasing trend of Australian travellers booking on mobile devices has also been observed.
To meet the needs of mobile-savvy Aussies, the new Flights app update is designed to improve user experience and simplify the flight search process. This is the first major change to the app’s design and functionality since its launch in 2011 and will enable travellers to access the power of Skyscanner from their pocket, searching and comparing millions of flights with more style and speed.
All the existing features remain, including the ability to filter by time and cabin class but the update also brings a host of new features to make finding the right flight easier than ever:
- Recent searches saved to the home screen
The new Flights app remembers recent searches. This means users can break their search with phone calls or navigate across other apps and pick up where they left off. Once logged in the searches also syncs across other connected devices with the Skyscanner Flight app or if the user logs in atwww.skyscanner.com.au allowing for an integrated experience across screens.
- Searching everywhere made simple
Finding and using the inspirational ‘Everywhere’ search is easier with the new design layout. Select ‘Everywhere’ as the destination and browse through flights to top destinations listed in price order.
- Top Offers
This new section is for all budget-conscious travellers and last-minute bookers looking for the best deals. Select from a number of low-cost flights to a wide variety of destinations from your nearest airport. Find cheap flights without typing a word.
- Push notifications for Price Alerts
Price Alerts which help travellers monitor the rise and fall in the flight fare they are tracking now comes in the form of push notifications on their mobile devices to alert users of any price change.
- Colour-coded calendar
The chart view for flexible flyers remains – enabling easy flight-cost comparisons across a number of days, but now includes a colour-coded calendar to make it easier to immediately view the cheapest days to fly on:
- Red: Most expensive options
- Amber: The in-betweens; not so expensive, but not the lowest either
- Green: Fares are cheap as chips; go forth and book.
- Better results filters
Sometimes cheapest doesn’t always mean the best. A traveller may want to avoid a red-eye flight or 15-hour layover on the way to Los Angeles Taking into account these factors, the user can look out for the Skyscanner rating which is based on price, flight duration and number of stops.
With the new app, flights can be arranged by price and duration, by take-off and landing time, or by this new rating where the shortest and cheapest flights are always highlighted. Users can now also share the details of the chosen flight with friends on preferred messaging platforms.
For new users, the Skyscanner Flights app can be downloaded from the iTunes or Google Play stores. Current users will receive a notification to install the new update to upgrade from the current version.
