Snap Travel – The Future of Travel Expedia leads the book on the go travel trend encouraging Hong Kongers to travel more spontaneously

April 16, 2014 OTA News No Comments Email Email

Expedia leads travellers into a new era of holidaying, that of deciding and booking your travel at the snap of your fingers.

In the past, Hong Kongers pride themselves on their advanced planning when it comes to holidays, booking at least 90 days ahead with every detail of the itinerary pre-determined.  Expedia is changing travel habits, introducing the concept of Snap Travel and highlighting the benefits of an unplanned getaway.

Recognising that future planning makes travel less spontaneous and exciting, Expedia, the Global Leading Online Travel Agency, showed Hong Kongers how easy Snap Travel is at its pop-up mobile booking station in Causeway Bay today. Users can experience the fun of travelling at the spur of the moment and ease of booking travel on-the-go. Snap Travel is about celebrating spontaneity without sacrificing the quality of experience or enjoyment of travelling. Snap Travel also helps travellers escape the tedium of planning in advance.

Last-minute hotel booking has seen a surge in popularity among Hong Kongers. A whopping 7% of travellers on Expedia.com.hk now purchase flights and hotel rooms 0-7 days before the check-in day, which is only a small percent lower than the 9% that make their booking 51-60 days in advance while 21% of travellers make a same day booking via mobile devices.

“The use of mobile devices is one of the main reasons that travellers can be more spontaneous, easily booking on the move with their smart devices. We are observing a trend towards last-minute booking,” says June Tsang, Marketing Manager of Expedia Hong Kong and Taiwan. “Book On The Go” allows travellers to book flights and hotels wherever they are in 30 seconds. With real time search, rich hotel visuals and instant confirmation, booking on the go has quickly become the hottest travel trend of the 21st century.

Short haul destinations are still the most popular routes for Snap Travel. The top 5 destinations booking 0-7 days before the trip in last 3 months are Chiang Mai, Singapore, Tokyo, Bangkok and Phuket.

The culture of Snap Travel was celebrated today at Expedia.com.hk’s pop-up mobile booking station in Causeway Bay. Participants who entered the station and booked via the Expedia app received free airline tickets and two nights’ accommodation in Taipei. Participants praised the Book On The Go function and the idea of Snap Travel. One of the participants said, “I have never tried snap travel before. I used to plan extensively before going on a trip. I can’t wait to just pack and go now – it’s so much fun.”

Expedia.com.hk’s pop-up booking station will be giving out more free tickets to other destinations soon – watch this space – to allow more Hongkongers to experience the new trend.
