Snow-capped mountains, Reindeer sleigh rides and the twinkling Arctic Sky Join Hurtigruten for an idyllic Christmas or New Year

November 15, 2013 Cruise No Comments Email Email

Norway is renowned for its Christmas traditions, steeped in the origins of countless legends of trolls and yuletide tales of sleighs and magical reindeer.

Imagine spending the festive period surrounded by snow-capped mountains, twinkly lights and with a bit of luck, the Christmas tree will be outshone by a festive display of the Northern lights.

Hurtigruten is pleased to offer a two for the price of one special on selected voyages over the festive period, meaning a Christmas break could cost as little as £49 per person per night on full-board basis. Untitled

Hurtigruten ships offer traditional festive specialities and the typically Norwegian relaxed atmosphere. Guests who not only want to enjoy the festive atmosphere on board but also experience the Norwegian Winter’s Tale on shore have a whole host of activities to choose from including a dog sledding tour, a snowmobile safari and even a reindeer sleigh ride. There is something on offer for every Arctic adventurer.

Celebrate Christmas the Norwegian way

Christmas in Norway is primarily a social experience – and this is no different on the Hurtigruten ships. The crew and guests decorate the vessels and the Christmas tree together with Christmas decorations made on board, and they learn Norwegian Christmas songs. Norwegian festive treats such as “Julekake”, a sweet Christmas bread with raisins, candied lemon peel, nuts and cardamom should not be missed. On 24 December, all Hurtigruten ships will moor in their respective ports for approximately 24 hours. In each location, the Hurtigruten guests are cordially invited to attend Christmas mass at the local churches. Christmas Eve is then celebrated on board with the crew and guests, and Julenissen, the Norwegian Father Christmas, pays the ships a visit.

The MS Polarlys will be arriving in Kjøllefjord on Christmas Eve, where it will stay until Christmas evening. The 12 day Classic Round Voyage departing on 19 December costs from £1,303 for two passengers (based on twin share, full board basis).

The Wilderness Adventure camp excursion including reindeer driving plus dog sledding or snowmobile safari costs from £253 per person.

See in the New Year in the Arctic Circle

“Godt nyttår”, the Norwegian New Year greeting, is heard on New Year’s Eve on board the Hurtigruten ships when the change of the year is heralded in. The New Year itself is spent in the harbour, lit up by fireworks, with dance and a champagne toast. Guests on the MS Midnatsol will be able to welcome the New Year in a very special place: after a festive New Year’s Eve on board in the port of Tromsø, they can enjoy a New Year’s Day excursion to the North Cape, mainland Europe’s northernmost point. There, guests are greeted by an exclusive New Year’s concert in the North Cape Hall.

The 7 Day Voyage north on board the MS Midnatsol, departing from Bergen on 27 December costs from £1,046 per person (based on twin share, full board basis).

The excursion to the North Cape costs £165 per person.
