Snow hits Queenstown skifields three weeks out to opening

May 24, 2017 Ski No Comments Email Email

The Remarkables ski field in Queenstown NZ measured around 75cms of snow over over the past two days, while at Coronet Peak 20cm landed at the base building. This layer plus the freezing temperatures were enough for Coronet Peak Ski Area Manager Nigel Kerr to flick the switch on a couple hundred snow guns on the mountain.

Quote from Nigel Kerr, Coronet Peak Ski Area Manager

“This first blast of snow has provided us with a great opportunity to top up on a good base with snow making.

“This year we have doubled the capacity to produce more snow near the base building, so our guests will enjoy an even thicker carpet of snow as they hop on the M1 Express,”

With more than 210 snow guns Coronet Peak has the largest snow-making system in the Southern hemisphere.

The Remarkables opens on June Saturday 10.

Coronet Peak opens on Saturday June 17.
